How much drive to you like with your bass? Do you like any sort of heavy distortion, or cleaner the better?

I don’t use that much gain. I do like the deep clean tones with out the distortion.

Kind of like a John Paul Jones type tone? Although, he did get pretty dirty in tone sometimes, but then again, that had to do a lot of the amps he might have been using, being cranked.

Yep. I never thought about JPJ sounds, but yeah.

I think I try to go with the similar sound, more or less. I also like the almost acoustic or wood tone that the violin bass has, especially with the flats on it.

Your Violin Bass may be more versatile for you, especially with the Flats on it. I like either Flats, or Nylons on Violins.

Yeah, it originally came with rounds on it, but I like the way the flats sound on it, better. I guess I'm a traditionalist when it comes to that bass, with that early to mid 60's tone, with the exception of the amplification, which is modern. Then again, what I'm using has a sort of vintage look to it, I suppose.

Speaking of flats, I was browsing AMS and had seen that Dunlop now makes short and medium scale flatwound strings. Since I do like doing business with AMS, and generally like Dunlop products (especially, MXR effects,) I'm going to try a set, I think. I've thought about trying those out when I was just using long scale basses, but never got around to doing that.

That sounds great about the Dunlop strings you like. It's tough finding a brand of strings that are to a player's liking, then to have them have the type of strings you want to use.

We'll see what happens, since I'm not 100% sure if that's what I'm going to get, but it might be so.

Good luck on the strings. I'm glad I'm into the ETB92 Nylons I use.

Have you ever tried any other brands of the nylon style?

I used La Bella Nylons on the Hofner I had. I thought they sounded good on it. The D'Addario ETB92's were still sounding ok on whatever they were on, so I had no reason to change them out.

Well, like the old saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Then again, I've not always stuck to that advice. :P

I've avoided that saying myself a considerable amount of the time. I wonder what happens if I turn this screw?

You got that one right partner. There are things that I'm ok with, and I know just enough to get myself into trouble with.
