Oddly enough, they both used Gibson basses, or at least back in the day. Which bass where you using for that?

The Ric 4003 for both.

How much different are the Ric single coil pickups than the Jazz, would you say? I know with it being a neck-thru, that's going to play in the tone as well, besides other construction details, wood, etc.

These Spl. 70's wound pups on the USA GL Jazz, are very similar to the pups on the Ric. A possible Geddy Lee specification to sound closer to a Rickenbacker. The Spl. 70's were made up to Geddy's specs after all.
Whatever the differences in the construction, and woods may have, with both strung with the ETB92 Nylons, the pups have a decent sound. I would have to say, I believe different Fender pups would not be as similar.

I was watching some videos about the 4003 bass and they mentioned something about it having a push/pull pot with one of the knobs to change the tone. I guess originally they had a circuit in there with one of the pickups, that effected the tone or, and they removed it, but then later did this so you'd have a choice of both sounds. You mess around with that at all? I never knew anything about that until I had watched this video.

Yeah, it's the the Treble Tone knob that you pull up on. What it does, it gives the 4003, a tone from the 4001. I've used a few times, but I didn't care for it. It's a pretty good idea in a way. It gives the 4003 a second bass tone. Two basses in one.

From what I was watching in this video, they were explaining how they removed that circuit with newer basses, but I guess people missed that sound, so they came up with this to bring it back. At least it does give you further tonal options. That Schecter Diamond J Bass had the same feature on it, more or less. Either that, or it changed the wiring path of the pickups. Maybe you might remember me talking about that back when I had that bass? The funny thing is I'll probably regret selling that bass, ten years down the road. You know how that goes. :P

Yeah, but once it's done, it's history. I do remember you having the Schecter Diamond J Bass. I came really close to getting one myself. The neck felt very good from what I remember.

Yeah, it had a nice neck on it, and sounded pretty decent, but I think I got into playing the violin bass, or maybe I didn't, since I did get a Squier Precision, albeit briefly. You know, I don't remember why I decided to sell that one. It's probably posted around here somewhere. :P It doesn't matter now, I suppose. It's gone, and I have an Ibanez, which is more or less a direct replacement, or replacement of a replacement, which was the Precision. That's a good bass, too. So no regrets with that one.

I think it was a good move to acquire the Ibanez. As to what you kept or sold after that, it comes down to what does a player require, need, etc. From what I've heard, Ibanez are reliable, well made basses. With a bass like that, a larger number of back up basses really shouldn't be needed. It does get tough to decide which ones to keep, and which ones to let go of.

I do have to agree with the assessment about the Ibanez basses, or at least with the ones that I've ever played on. As for the other basses, I suppose they will have their time and place, once that is all eventually situated. I still also play on the violin bass, and will do more so of that when I get back into a 60's mode again, especially with that side project.

In my present playing, two basses are more than enough. For you, it doesn't hurt to have any number of basses. It all equals out, the Violin Bass does seem to fit you rather well.

I'd say what you have definitely covers all ground. To be honest, if I could get my hands on a Ric, I'd gladly adapt back to playing long scales again, not knocking anything I have now. Those have about the same mid 60's mojo as the hollow body basses do, especially with flats. 8)

The GL Jazz, and the Ric do well for what ever I'll like to play. Going through the Bassman doesn't hurt either.

Yeah, I'd say that's a pretty formidable combination. 8)
