It's not a "Jazz" neck. It's PRECISION width neck. I'll have to wait until it gets here to send it back now.........

Why would they say "Jazz" and have it be really wide like that? I'm bummed. It never occurred to me that they would do this.

Jazz neck: 38mm. 5 string, nearly 48mm? That is stupid lame. For shame.

Maybe they did that because it's a 5 string and the Jazz width might be too small for the extra string? I don't know, since I've never played or seen a Fender 5-string in person.

With all due respect, I have two 5's and they are 44/45mm respectively.

It's my fault, I only did "semi pretty good better than most" research. I didn't do "OMG JHC hyper super anal detailed" research.

I've NEVER heard of a 5 string with a nearly 48mm neck.

Let's put this into perspective, a jazz bass has a 38mm nut. So we're talking 10MM to cover a 5 string? I think people over/under estimate how important mm's are. You have to have alien fingers to play something like that properly. It's WAY wider than the majority of 5 strings.

Anyways, I'm pissed. I'm not even opening the box, just putting in for a return. The money will go to a Maruszczyk which is a far better instrument with a 45MM nut.

Later!

I don't blame you for wanting to return it. I think instruments are something you should completely be 100% happy with, since you are going to invest time and money into them.

I decided to pull it out, just to make sure. The neck is the size of a Cadillac

Totally unplayable, and worse you can't even get it set up because the saddles can't go lower and the neck feels like it's gonna snap if I tighten in any more.

My elbow is sore from just testing it.

Too bad, I'll know to look much harder at the specs next time.

BTW, I found another flaw that really irritates me (In case anyone from fender ever see this)

It was painful trying to get the B string off to at least change the strings (fender strings are known to be kinda still) and you CANNOT put a 130 on. it's an impossibility because the hole on the bridge BARELY can handle a 125.

Who comes up with these ideas? It's COMMON for sets to have a 130 for the 5th string.

Honestly, I'm just baffled. I'm not expecting custom shop craftsmanship but this is a significant oversight. Plus, it sounds great. But if you can't play it, who cares?

Seriously, like the title says, major bummed.

Sorry to hear about your trouble.

I finally joined the Fender 5 string family last week.

I'd been waiting years to find a killer deal on a Fender 5, and I finally did it.

At a pawnshop, I found a '94 Fender Jazz 5 Plus that was converted from the Lace Sensor Kubicki to EMG Active.

This bass is a tone monster.

The store was asking $255 and I was able to get them down to $203.99 + tax.

I think I his a home run with this one.

Here's a few pics from the store.

47.6mm Is the size of the Fender Am. Pro. 5 string, and the Deluxe MIM 5 String . That is probably close to, or the standard you may find on Fender 5 string Jazzes. If you would've checked out the specs also, the Bridge is set for a .125, not .130 string. You really need to take 5 minutes to check out the specs on a online purchase. Don't go jumping up and down on them, you didn't check it out first.

That's a hell of a deal for that bass, and pretty nice looking one, too. 8)

Thanks Paul.

It is a great sounding bass and play great.

I'm glad I held out for the right 5 string at the right price.

I used to have a Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V (had to sell it unfortunately....ugh), but I did find that the width at the nut was wider than it needed to be (relative to the string-to-string spacing of a 4-string Jazz). But having said that, it didn't make the bass unplayable.
