Can't say that I do. Yes I know you can string them through the bridge too, but it bugs me.

I dunno, all the greatest and custom-shop basses don't have this, why it is a thing for regular elite/professional series? Sustain? Meh, do not agree. Sorry.

Dream bass: Elite, passive, no string through. It's just not fair I tell you, just not fair!!!!!

Yes, I do! In fact on my 2012 Fender American Standard Jazz with roundwounds I string the G & D through the body, and the A & E through the bridge. It's wonderful that way, and I'll never revert to either/or.

For flatwounds it is always through the bridge for all strings and never through the body.

yeah, that's one of the things I don't like. They simply are too big (the E or especially the B ) to do that with imo.

I also do not like tapper wounds. So it's a bad combo for me.

I'd just love to see the sleekness of the elite (hardware, easy truss adjust, etc) w/o going overboard.

I've tried through the body and through the bridge.
I can't say I noticed anything earth shatteringly different.
Since I saw no great difference I choose to go through the body for reasons that may become clear later in this comment.

Some people believe there is slightly more side-tension (resistance to fretting pressure) going through the body rather than going through the bridge.
They believe the strings 'feel' harder going through-body, softer going through-bridge.
I can think of no scientific reason to support that notion and I have never felt any difference in my hands.
The tension on the string between the saddle and nut (or fret) required to produce a given pitch with a given gauge won't change with how the string is routed outside of that area.
The tension is the tension.
Scale length can affect that aspect of feel.
String routing outside the actual scale length, not so much.
It will have an effect on other parts of the guitar but not on the vibrating length of string.

Some people believe you get better sustain going through the body over going through the bridge.
At least that idea has some level of merit.
The through-bridge method has a slight tendency to lift the back end of the bridge plate off the body.
Not really lifting it off, since it's screwed in place.
More like having a static force pulling in that direction but not achieving much other than reducing the pressure of plate to body force and re-routing that force through the screws and onto the wooden threads in the hole.
Going through-body removes the stress of anchoring the string from the bridge and places it on the body, thus eliminating any upward pull on the back end of the bridge.
Going through-bridge places pressure on the the bridge mounting screws, both up from the body and side pressure wanting to pull the bridge toward the nut.
Going through-body removes both of those forces and places pressure down on the saddles only.
This pushes the bridge down more firmly onto the body which gives rise to the idea of increased sustain.
How much that different force vector affects sustain would likely not be discernible without an oscilloscope.
I suspect string selection would have a greater impact on sustain.

Interesting.

For me, I've had everything. And I really only like the feel of a 34" bass with strings from the end of the bridge.

It just feels right.

In no way am I saying that people shouldn't like it, but it seems strange to me that all the top/medium MIA fender basses have it mandatory.

It's not mandatory at all. You can go through the bridge. There is a little trick to it on what Fender calls their vintage hi-mass bridge in that the ball end must be inserted flat so that it fits into the bridge recess, but that's all there is to it.

Forgive me, but I'm not saying it's mandatory you use them. But I don't want 4 holes when I know for a fact I won't use them.

ALL professional/elite series have them that I'm aware of.

Anyways, to each their own. I still think that having them mandatory on professional/elite is kinda weird.

The holes are there to provide the option, not to make anything mandatory.
If the holes were not there then the bridge way would be mandatory.
That would be the real crime, in my view.
You always have the option to not buy the bass if you dislike the holes so much.
There are tons of other basses.

I used to string through, but now that I play basses that don't string through, I can see the damage to the strings as they go over the top of the saddle, and go through the body at pretty acute angle.

Again, if you buy a pro/elite, the holes are MANDATORY. I don't want the holes.

Anyways, I can't communicate so.......

So don't buy a bass with the holes.

I want a new pickup but I want one in a high end trim level, while still having a regular cab and an 8 foot box.
If I can't find one, I won't buy one.
It's not rocket science.
They aren't going to force me to buy a quad cab with a stupid 4 or 5 foot box.
It's up to me to decide which is more important; trim level or functionality.

It's up to you to decide which is more important on a bass.
Personally I can't see any reason to be upset by the holes.
It's not like they're on the front of the guitar for all to see.
I think the exposed truss-rod wheel would be a far greater visual deterrent for me.

I don't like strings, through or otherwise. They interfere with my playing. :P
