Hi Ya doing Everyone,

First post,

I just bought a used GL Bass (got a good deal on it) and I'm VERY happy with it.
However I am getting a nasty buzz with both the Pickup volume pots.
The Tone pot is fine and the shielding seems ok (meaning if let go of the strings while plugged into my bassman 100 I'm not getting any significant hiss.)
With both Pickup pots turned up full the buzz does go away but it bugs none the less to know something isn't right.

I've sprayed the pots with wd40 and they don't "krackle" when I turn them.

How can I tell if the pots are bad or maybe just not grounded properly?

Thanks everyone!

Welcome to the Forum.

Pots are dirty. You need to get a good electronics spray cleaner. WD40 is not good for that.

Also keep in mind that jazz basses have single coil pick ups and when both are not full volume they pick up interference , only when both volumes are full they are in phase (if Im not mistaken) and the noise gets cancelled . So that noise is normal when you use any one of the pick ups alone or in different volumes . I have a jazz bass and it does the same noise . But if the noise is too loud even with both pups full volume it could be a faulty ground connection at the bridge (happened to me once).

Thanks jlarocho,

I believe your interference theory is correct because depending on where I plug in and play, the noise varys from barely audible to very noisy.

Thanks!
