I am new to this forum, so hello!

OK, I recently purchased a used Jazz Bass from the local GC. I had seen it in the store and played it several times over the course of a month and basically decided that I had to have it. As I was purchasing it, the sales guy mentioned that he didn't even know what kind of Jazz Bass it was. I sort of assumed that because it had 22 frets and active pickups that it was an American Deluxe model.

So here is my question: what did I just buy?!?!? My bass is an American model with 22 frets, active electronics and is from around '96 (the "N6" gives that away), it has some pretty strange pickups - one pole per string. I think that deluxe models have serial numbers starting with "DN", but mine does not. I've looked at some price guides and they don't mention anything other than active deluxe models for '96. I have seen these pickups on exactly one other J-Bass before . . . in a picture of a '96 on the internet (identical to mine).

Any clues? I love the bass - it plays well and sounds great - I just want to know more about it.

If it helps out any at all, my 97 (possibly 98 ) American Deluxe Jazz bass S/N is N7246380. The pickups and hardware look almost identical to mine, other than the fact that mine is a 5, and yours a 4. Might I ask how much you paid? As you probably got a REALLY good deal.

I paid $900 for it. I was planning on buying a new Highway One Jazz to keep my HW1 Tele company, but after playing this thing in the store a few times I figured that I wouldn't miss the extra 50 bucks.
