Well, it's certainly a lot cheaper than a German Hofner, that's for sure. You can't beat a deal like that. I wish I could have gotten one of those instead, but I just didn't have enough funds at the time, and had to settle for what I've got. It's not bad, though. It does work. It's just the pickups aren't too hot on it.

I guess the pups would add up a bit so they'd be putting it up to a newer violin / viola price range, maybe. Adding everything up, cost wise.

Yeah, that's the thing. Plus, I imagine the actual cost of a set of new pickups (especially, those, which aren't exactly common, like Precision or Jazz pickups,) and having to install them, would probably cost as much as you would spend just getting the Epiphone Viola. It wouldn't be worth the upgrade, and I really don't know how to solder in the first place. I suppose I could learn, though.

The Epi Viola runs $399. About I think at, or about as much as a Hofner. The Humbuckings on the Epi are pretty fine.

Do you know if those are the same humbuckers they use on all of their basses that have them? They do look the same, to me, at least.

I'm not sure, but they do look like the Humbuckings on other Epi's. The Viola I have is definitely not a quiet playing bass. Nice volume coming out of this one.

They probably are the same ones, then. That's good that they put out some volume. I found out that was the one thing that was a weakness on my violin bass, but I didn't realize it until I got the Ampeg, and I played on the Ibanez Talman, first. The Ibanez has some strong pickups on it.

Speaking of Epiphone, I noticed something about their Thunderbird basses. It doesn't look like they are made in the Chinese factory, like the EB or Viola basses (to name a couple.) I was looking at pics of those on the AMS site, and they had one where you could see the back of the headstock, and there was a sticker on them that said that they were made in Indonesia. I thought that was interesting, so most likely they could be made by another company, like Cort, or Samick, which used to build instruments for other brands. Most of the Ibanez instruments are made there, and a lot of the Squier, too. Actually, there's a lot made there. I wonder if they are doing that, or perhaps they have their own factory there, which is probably unlikely. I should look and see if I can find any other Epiphones made there. It seemed as far as the basses go (I didn't look at every single model,) the Thunderbirds were the only ones.

I just know the Viola is a China mfg. I would have assumed the Thunderbird is too, I guess not. I saw the Jack Cassidy is a China mfg.

Yeah, it just seems it's the Thunderbirds that are. I did check a few random 6-stringers from them, and they were all China, as well. I don't know what to make of that. I did actually pick up one of their Thunderbird basses (the cheapest one, with the bolt on neck,) very briefly when I was leaving the shop were I got the Peavey bass, and I thought it felt nice in the hand, and played well. I didn't have time to plug it in, though. It felt pretty light, and not awkward, despite it's shape.

Thunderbird neck shapes didn't always fit my smaller hands that well. Gibson, or Epiphone necks.

Did you play a Gibson or Epiphone version of a Thunderbird? I don't know if there is much of a diffence between the necks with the two, and they also have some that are neck-thru, and the one I played was bolt on, which may have had a different shape to it.

I had a Gibson Thunderbird a few years ago. It played nice, but I don't remember how the neck felt on it. I have tried the Epi version, and didn't care for the thickness of the Epi neck.

Yours, with the Viola bass, and that Markbass combo. That pic you posted with the both of them together.

Now I noticed you took the pic down. I take it the Viola is no longer around?
