But then again, it's not an automatic guarantee that you'll get one just as good, or better. I guess it all depends on how good the quality control is at that particular time.

I think one of the shabbiest QC issues I recently had, was the walnut finish SG Std. with the cracked nut.

Oh yeah, I remember that! No wonder you thought the Epiphone was better. A bass in that price range certainly shouldn't have that kind of issue, at least in my thinking. Hell, I've bought basses brand new $200 and cheaper and never had that kind of issue!

You know it. Things like that can turn players away from something pretty easily.

Yeah, especially when you put out a lot of money for something, as well.

I guess it's impossible to get anything right, at any price.

Cool. 8) What happened, you wind up having some extra cash to get it back?

I actually had pretty close to enough to get it back.

Oh yeah, with its case, and Nylons all intact. When I was there picking it up, I asked the guitar tech to double check the intonation for me, incase I missed something first time around on it. He found the bridge needed a small nudge. That got the intonation right on.
I played it today, and I never remember the 500/1 German Hofner I had sounding as fine as this Epi Viola does. It does play through one of the lower rated 410 cabs, but the bass has to be able to put the lower tones out in the first place. I'm glad I re-acquired my Viola.

Well, it's certainly a lot cheaper than a German Hofner, that's for sure. You can't beat a deal like that. I wish I could have gotten one of those instead, but I just didn't have enough funds at the time, and had to settle for what I've got. It's not bad, though. It does work. It's just the pickups aren't too hot on it.
