Do you remember the first Jazz Bass you ever had? I've only had two Fenders, a Squier and two copies, one being a Hohner fretless copy and the Schecter. I've been picking up the Squier a lot lately, even though it has a short in it.

It was an Am. Jazz I got from a friend. Olympic White / Maple.

So what happened to that one? I actually still remember what became of all of mine, besides the two I still have.

Did you try one out, or you just decided to order one for the hell of it?

I did manage to play one for about ten minutes. It was ok. I liked ordering it from Sweetwater. I was able to pick the one I liked from the guitar gallery they have.

The deal is was able to get on the USA Geddy Lee Jazz, totally covered the Epi Viola, the Epi Viola case for it, and a few Buckeroos for my wallet too. Ordering the bass, and case from Sweetwater, saved the sales tax I would have had to pay for a local purchase , or online with SA. Like I said somewhere else, I was able to pick the bass I wanted from the Guitar Gallery on SW. It's somewhat like no surprises when the carton is opened. It's in transit now from Indiana.

Sounds like a good deal. I'm damned curious to see your report on the Viola bass. To be honest, I would have rather have gotten that one instead of the one I have, but they raised the price on it, and I couldn't get enough funds to cover it at the time. Not to knock what I have, but I think it would have been a lot better quality, especially with the pickups on it.

I realized after getting the Ibanez Talman, and playing both through the Ampeg, that's the one area where my violin bass has a weakness. They are pretty quiet, and truth be told, probably was more problematic to my sound than the Orange was. Then again it did sound so good through the Fender amp, and still does. Go figure. I also did play the Ibanez through the Orange, before I sold it, and it was somewhat of an improvement, but not the Ampeg. Still, what do you expect for $100? You'd be lucky to get a decent set of pickups for that.

Another thing I'm also glad about you getting the Viola bass is I know you'll put some nylons on there, and that thing has the same bridge on it like mine, so I'll know how that will work out with those. I've been reluctant to try that out, because I wasn't sure how that bass would handle those, because they are thicker strings. I know you'll have to use medium scale strings instead of short scale strings, though.

Maybe because I'm older now, and have been reflecting on my EKO, but for me the Epi Viola is as close I can do for a good sound. The pups on the Epi are pounding MF's. On the Violin / Viola basses, I do believe the electronics are what makes, or breaks a Violin / Viola bass.

My 1969 EKO 995, had Nylons on it. I don't remember the brand of the Nylons, but they were no where near the Nylons of today. I do like the Epi not having a pup switch, like my EKO had.

You know I'll let you know how goes on it. From what I took in on playing the one the other day, WOW! The serial number was very close to mine coming in. That was being played through a Rumble 40 Combo. At least the basic similar head sound, and Eminence speaker sound was there.

Well, I think if you liked the one you tried out, then most likely the one you've ordered will be the same, hopefully. I agree about the pickups, which wound up being the one thing that I found out that is a negative with my bass. It's not because they necessarily sound bad, just not that powerful. Sure, I could nitpick even further, but like I've said, I only paid $100 for it, and it was brand new, so based on that, it's a nice bass. I play it all of the time, and have used it live. It does that early to mid 60's type sound quite well, I think.

I've actually seen pics of some nylon strings from back in the 60's, and they were actually navy blue in color. I know Rotosound had them back then. Paul McCartney had a set of Rotosound nylons on his Hofner when they did "Abbey Road," and maybe even "Let It Be."

I first started using Nylons in late 1969 - early 1970. They really sucked compared to the ones I play today. Of course, the pros probably had better Nylons than I did.
