That's true. That would also be interesting to see what the tonal differences are between the two, as well.

I have the Epi purchased over the phone, for me to acquire tomorrow, Monday morning at GC, with it's Epi Viola case. My ETB92M Nylons are still strung on it as well.

It will be interesting so listen for any tonal differences between the two. I don't remember, is your's a Violin, or Viola?

Probably violin, but I'm not sure. Here's a pic of it, again: Image

That's right when I got that bass. It still has the original strings on it, and the truss rod cover, which I left off, in case I had to tweak the truss rod, and I didn't trust the tiny screws that held the cover, I was afraid I might strip them out, trying to remove them, if I had to.

That's a good looking bass. I can't tell myself by the angle, wether it's a Violin, or Viola. The tuning keys look very similar to the Epi tuning keys. The tail piece looks about the same as well. I'm glad to see you posted it again.

From what I can tell, it might be roughly the same size as the Epiphone. The bodies do look alike, and they both have the round control knobs.

Compare the Douglas to the Epi, the two appear to be very similar. I'm guessing your Douglas is a Viola size body like the Epi.

It does look like it. Looking at your signature pics, I can tell the Epiphone is slightly wider than the Hofner. Not at lot, but you can tell. What's the sound difference between the two? Have you messed around with that, yet?

Not side by side, but the Hofner Staple Humbuckings are stronger, and more powerful than the Epi Viola pups. I can tell that by the settings on the amp, and the Epi being not as loud as the Hofner was, when playing through the amp.

Your Douglas, and my Epi could be made by the same builder, if your Douglas is made in China, like my Epi. Where was your Douglas made?

Interesting that they are. The funny thing is it sounds like even the Epiphone's pickups are louder than the violin bass I have. I'm sure the Hofner pickups are made in their factory with their basses. It wouldn't surprise me that the pickups on their Ignition basses are probably the same ones, or similar to the Epiphone ones, since they are both from the same country, I think. By the way, speaking of Hofner parts, those Hofner strings are expensive as hell. They're like $70 a set. They have those at that one place I showed you that had the pickups, and other parts, and Vox stuff. I'm willing to bet they're just Pyramid brand strings, just labeled to with the Hofner name. They used to use that brand on them, and those are just as expensive. They do have some ones called "Contemporary" or something like that. which are a lot cheaper, though. Like your typical price for flats and rounds.

Yeah, the Douglas is made in China. You want to know something funny, have you ever heard of the Johnson brand? It was one of the more common budget brands that were especially on a lot of internet gear shops, especially in the early 2000's, and still around. I'm not sure if Musician's Friend carried them, or not. Maybe they did before Guitar Center bought them out, or if even Guitar Center even carried it at some point. Anyway, they have their own bass, which they call a viola bass, which they've had for many years, and if you look at it carefully, especially the headstock and compare it to mine, they are identical, with the exception mine isn't a sunburst, but they did have mine in sunburst, but I chose the black one, instead.

That sure looks like the Epi Viola. Or vice versa. ImageImage

The Epi Viola takes the place of the EKO 995, I had 50 years ago. Old dreams, NEVER DIE!

I do know the headstock to the Johnson is identical to the Douglas, and the funny thing about that, is the Douglas is at least over $100 cheaper than that one, and it would not shock me if it comes from the same factory. The Epiphone looks like it, too, with the exception of the headstock. Although, I suspect the Epiphone has more quality control and better pickups going into it. I have no idea what the Johnson one even sounds or plays like. There might be a video somewhere with someone reviewing it, I suppose.

That's good that you were able to find a replacement to the Eko bass. Sometimes, we can get something that we lost back again, or at least to some degree. 8)

I'm returning the Epi. It just isn't sounded that good after all. I tried everything I could do to get it right, and even had someone who knows a lot more than I do to get it sounding right. He told me it's in the build of the bass, and would cost more to fix than it's worth. He advised me to return it while I can. I trust his advise.

Wow, that sucks. I suppose you probably really noticed it after comparing it with the Hofner. What are you going to do now with the money that you spent on it? Get another one, or something else?
