I've played on them before. I had a Hofner Ignition Violin before I had the 500/1 German Hofner.

I did a post in another spot about ordering a German Vin. '64 Violin at a reduced price.

Yes I did. I'm still stretching it, but I figure, now or never to replace the other '64 Violin I had. The '64 has a thinner neck than the previous years 500/1 Violins.

You mean earlier 60's models from like 1963, or current years?

Yeah,..... the '64 has a 3 piece neck, and board but the older '63, '62, etc. have a 2 piece neck. and board. The cuts are thicker on the '63, '62 500/1 Hofners. The '64 got the nickname "pencil", or "pencil neck", because of the thinner configuration of the 3 piece neck, and board. The '64 also has a bound fretboard that was not on previous year 500/1 Hofners. That's the basic differences between the '62, and the '64 that I had a choice to get.I don't know if there are any more differences between the two series.

I was looking at their site, and they had a lot of models for that series, even a fretless one.

Very interesting! A fretless would be fine!

Yeah, I imagine you can get quite an upright bass tone with that, especially using the nylon strings, which is what those were intended for emulating that. By the way, Hofner has their own strings that they sell, which includes nylon strings. That's cool, because then you know they'll fit a Hofner bass. https://www.hofner-guitars.com/guitars- ... nylon.html I know you like the D'Addarios, but I thought that was cool that's another option.

I'm using La Bella 760NHBB. Nylon Beatle Bass strings. I'll have to checkout the Hofner Nylons. The 500/1 '64 comes with Hofner flats from the factory.

I checked on the Hofner Nylons, and they don't give any gauges for the strings. The La Bella Nylons fit fine on Hofners, and are extremely close to D'Addario Nylons in both sound, and gauge. Image

Yeah, I did noticed there wasn't much info on their site, other than that they exist. I don't even know where you'd buy them. All I found on their shop page was mugs and things like that.

I believe they can be purchased directly from them. I bought my set for the Hofner through the TB store.

AMS sells LaBella strings. They even offer the Hofner set, as well. I thought about that as an option for my violin bass, if I were to get a set for it. That's not the priority for getting strings, right now, though. If anything, I thought about getting flats for the Peavey bass and see about getting that one set up and going.

Have either of you thought about getting a Jazz Bass and doing a Berry Oakley "Tractor" mod (Move the neck pickup back by the bridge and put a Guild Starfire/Gibson humbucker in the neck position)?
