Very interesting about John L.'s guitar.

It's not too far fetched to imagine something similar happening to the missing McCartney bass.

Although could you imagine buying a guitar from a friend for $100, passing it around at parties etc. then finding out it has serious historical value?

Yeah, really. I wonder how often that's even happened?

I can think of a 1969 EKO-995 with a signature on its back. I never told my father it was stolen.

Jaco's "Bass of Doom" was allegedly bought at a pawn shop for $250. If you think about it a 1962 Jazz with 1963 electronics, that had been broken and glued back together numerous times isn't going to have that high a resale value unless its previous owner was a legend.

That remind me that back in the 90's, I saw a 1964 Jazz Bass for being dirt cheap, simply because someone spray painted the back of the neck black, ruining it's value, I guess. I mean they wanted something like $400 for it, but there could have been other issues with it, as well. Normally, those basses go into the thousands, if not five figures, depending on condition. I did play on it, but to be honest, didn't really think much of it. I kind of lost my taste for Fender Jazz Basses at that time, anyway. If it were a Precision Bass, that might have been a different story.

Like I said with Jaco's bass between yanking the frets, replacing the electronics and smashing it a half dozen or more times if it had belonged to anyone else it would've been worth about $250.

That's true. It was in pretty rough shape, besides the frets being yanked out. Then again, people pay a lot of money for guitars to look like they're beat to crap, when they're new. :P

It wasn't one of my high points in my life, that's for sure. Done, and over with.

True. There isn't much you can do about that. Besides, you've got some really decent gear now, anyway. I've also lost some stuff, but the gear I do have is actually a lot better than that was, anyway.

In some cases, it all works out. The AC Jazz isn't the GL Jazz, and the GL Jazz isn't the AC Jazz. They are both Jazzes that play fine. Which one is better, don't know, don't care. Which ever one I have is more than good enough for my playing these days.

The interesting thing about both of them is they are the signature basses of two bassists who's bands you're not in to, or at least from what you've told me. I suppose it doesn't matter, as long as you like the bass. Although, they put out a signature bass of a bassist who's band kind of annoyed the hell out of me, so even though it looked cool, I don't know if I could bring myself to even consider it, because it would remind me of them. :P I don't know, maybe if it were ridiculously dirt cheap, and such a deal that I couldn't pass up, then I might go for it, and probably just cover up the signature on it with something. :P

It's ironic that I have the AC Jazz now. I could personally not care if U-2 is around, or not. I do however like the music Geddy Lee plays, just not Geddy's voice. The AC Jazz is more like an Am. Std. that I do like a bit more now than I did before over the GL Jazz. If the two weren't Sig. Jazzes I'd like them both anyway.

It seems to me that the AC bass was modeled from a late 60's Jazz, with the block inlay, and the matching painted head stock. At least that's the vibe I get from it, and compare it to Jazzes from that time visually. Maybe he has something like a '68 Jazz and that's were they got the idea to do a signature model. He certainly can afford vintage models, as much money as that band was able to make.
