Hi everyone, I thought I would ask this in the forum because I haven't had any luck troubleshooting or researching online.
The issue: I am beginning to suspect that the s-1 switch in my jazz bass might be having issues.

Background: I'm the (proud) original owner of a 2006 American Standard Jazz bass. When I purchased the bass, I changed out the pickups with Nordstrand NJ4's. I've made no other changes to the bass and it has given me no issues in the 11 years I've owned it until recently.

I've noticed that the bass started intermittently sounding distorted at medium to high volumes (originally I thought I had a blown speaker, or that my amp was dying). This continued for a while, then recently, the bass just completely cuts out from time to time. I've swapped out cables, amps, speaker cabs, opened the bass up and checked to make sure all of the wires look good, and no cold solder joints on the pots--the issue is still present. When fiddling with the bass while plugged in, I noticed that the volume 1 knob and s-1 switch sound unusually "scratchy". The distortion seems to only occur if the s-1 switch is engaged, but the loss of signal remains even if I switch it off. Has anyone had similar issues or have any suggestions?

Have you tried cleaning the S-1 switch/pot assembly?

It's possible that dirt, grime, or other foreign matter has accumulated within, causing shorts and/or intermittent contact. Try spraying some Caig De-Oxit or similar electrical cleaner into the switch and pot then briskly rotate the shaft and engage/disengage the button. Repeat several times and see if that doesn't help the situation.

You're welcome. I hope it works......replacing that complex switch/pot is a real sonofabitch to re-wire and re-solder.

Best of luck.

If it goes completely dead Deoxit spray probably is not the solution but handy to have around for regular maintenance of standard pots. You can go two ways, replace the S-1 switch pot with a new S-1 switch pot or replace it with a standard pot and ditch the S-1 feature altogether rewiring it in standard fashion. S-1 switches are notorious for failing. I would not gig an S-1 bass without a backup.
