I've had this since November 2016. I remember it sounding amazing in store with a Fender Rumble 500; I ended up buying the Rumble 200 as 500 was somewhat excessive for home use and I couldn't tell any difference at a reasonable level (cranked not even to 20%!).

After the factory strings went dull, I put on a set of Dunlop Stainless Steel Super Bright. Even after breaking them in, I never really liked the sound of the open E, it's like it lacked too much of the fundamental. A lot of the tone in general was lacking a clean fundamental (any string), it was too much like harmonic resonance that was colouring the sound. I just put on the Marcus Miller signature edition of the Dunlop Stainless Steel Super Bright and I'm finding the same problem.

Plenty of people use the same strings and they sound nothing like mine. I've fiddled with the amp's EQ, a parametric EQ, compressor, and can't manage to clean up the sound. Tried a different cable and direct to my audio interface and same problem. Does this sound normal to you? Is it just my playing style, could something not be setup correctly? Maybe these strings just don't like the new Jazz Bass design (tall narrow freights, pickups)?

Here's a sample recording. Begins with open string slaps then fingers. Pickups and tone wide open. Any input would greatly be appreciated!

Update:

I finally got it to sound bit better. It was weird, but on the amp I basically boosted the gain a tadt. Bass and both mids are around 1 o'clock with the "brightness" enabled. Then I cranked the low-end on my parametric EQ, made some mid cuts, and voila:
