I play a Geddy Jazz now but I am planning on trying out the new American Standards tomorrow. I haven't played a P bass before so I really don't know what to expect. I was hoping to get a little feedback on the 2, jazz and precision, before I try them.
I usually play an assortment of music...country(old&new), southern rock, rock, classic rock, and some R&B. In your opinion which bass would be more versatile? I play through a Fender Bassman 250/210 amp. Thanks for any feedback.

You need to spend some quality time with both. Since you got a GL now, you kinda know what a jazz neck will feel like, width-wise. Granted the GL isn't as thick as a normal jazz neck. The p neck is wider, and may feel abnormal and uncomfortable for you at first, but it will work itself out with time. As seeing as you got a jazz bass now, I say go for the P. It will give you something different to play around with. Also purchase from a store that has a 30-day return policy, that way you can return whatever you bought if you don't like it. Here's a recent thread about the same general stuff.

FWIW I have 2 P-basses now, and will be adding a Jazz or two soon.

I have the Geddy and a MIM Jazz so I am used to the jazz neck. I use to play an Ibanez BTB400 which has a pretty thick neck so the P bass neck would probably be all right. I just kind of wonder which is more versatile as far as different music styles. The bad thing is, in order to get a new 08 I'll have to dump the Geddy. Hard choice to make if it comes down to that.

Once again...

The Fender Precision Bass & the Fender Jazz Bass, they both are icons for reason, they both are proven tone making tools.

Playability aside (obvious differences in th e neck width - has some tonal implications) . . .

The P-Bass has a more pronounced thick midrange tone than a Jazz Bass.

Although the Jazz Bass with its two traditionally single coil pickups has more versatility in tone, it will not nail down the sound of a P-bass. The type of pickup and the location can’t be duplicated. Of course you can use just the neck pickup of a Jazz Bass, again it is close but it is not going to get the exact sound for reasons that have been already mentioned.

Strings selection, equalization, amplifier selection, etc., can only do so much, it still takes a P-Bass to sound like a P-Bass.

The bottom line, your taste, gigs, recordings, style, genre, musical requirements, etc., will dictate which is better for you. :)

Sorry, I'm an idiot. I did not see your basses in your sig. Personally, I would wait until I had enough money to get what I want. I don't like to give up a bass to get another, unless I really dislike it. And don't trade it in, you'll get alot less than if you sold it outright. Are you sure about the BTB having a thick neck? I fiddled on a BTB200 for a bit and thought that the neck was tiny.

I had a BTB 450, the neck is wide, thin but wide. I liked it a lot. I recorded with it too. It was a great bass, 35" scale, drop tuning to C and took it like a champ.

I've had my Jazz Bass('98 Std. Jazz AKA "The Horse") For the past 10 years and it has NEVER let me down! :D Having a P Bass(had one, got stolen  ) will have a definite positive impact on your sound and your playing. Find a P that's perfect for you.

Can u elaborate, how does having a certain type of model bass will have positive impact on playing? I get the impact on sound if you're looking for a certain sound, but amp, type of wood, fretboard wood, and pups have more to do with the sound than the type of bass model.

While it is true that the body and neck wood, pickups and the amp are big factors, when you find THAT Bass...it just calls to you to play it. I hope this helps.

I really don't get it. My 6 string, BTB, SoundGear, Fender, etc, all the basses I've had I've tune my amp to have the sound I like, which always sound the same the way I made it sound through the amp with little tweaks. Even now, my Squier, yes Squier, I've tune the amp to make it sound like my '87 Fender. Honestly, these set up, plus each signature playing that the player does with the bass makes the signature sound of the player. I do get that certain bass would sound a certain way, like the higher end of the J Bass as oppose to the fatter sound of the P Bass, but then again, the amp still is a big factor, along with pups to make "your" sound. I could be wrong, I'm not trying to argue with you, just pointing out what I've learned in the past 20 years.

No, you're not wrong at all; it's all about individual perspective.
