I've suddenly stepped into the role of mentor on the bass for a young friend of mine and am trying to teach him some songs on the bass. Since I haven't been playing too long and mostly do so by ear when playing. I was wondering if anyone knows of some good "roaming" bass lines or some simple songs I can teach him. Nothing basic but nothing too complex. I've been utilizing some scales and a dimmed down version of Wild Thing so far.

Thanks for the songs so far. I'm going to edit my original post as the word "Roving" makes me sound like an idiot. The words "mobile" or "roaming" make more sense.

I wouldn't be starting a new playing off with roving or walking bass lines. They have to learn the basics first.

Find out what songs the student likes and listen to them to see if you can figure out the bassline. If they are simple, you can have hime try them fisrt. That way they stay interested because they are playing one of their favorite songs. Once he has learned a song that he likes you can mix other songs in.

I started my son off with these:

"Firehouse" by Kiss
"Fortunate Son" by Creedence
"Home" by Daughtry
"You Can't Hurry Love" by Phil Collins

If you want to do a simple bass line that walks a little bit try
"Dance With Me" by The Wonders off of the That Thing You Do soundtrack

That is precisely what i am doing. I am not his teacher in this situation so I actually get a bit of a backseat and teach him practical bass playing and the basics. The only problem is that he learns quickly and grows tired with easy bass lines (hence my asking for moderately challenging mobile bass lines in my original post)

So far I would like to thank everyone who has contributed with these recommendations.

The "Cake" version of "I Will Survive" has a pretty cool bass line.
