Wasn't Gibson or Rickenbacker doing those?

Gibson was. It was ok,........ but it wasn't as decent as Rosewood. A hard wood. Maple.

I remember seeing it mentioned in specs, now. It sounds like some sort of dessert. :P

I didn't like it as a dessert, or a fretboard.

What was wrong with it?

It was a harder wood than the Rosewood, so it gave the feel of a maple board. That wasn't to bad. A maple, I think, doesn't need to have a string pressed down as hard on the board, to get a clean note from it. Mainly, the Baked Maple, was dull looking, and didn't have the looks, or the luster of some, not all, Rosewoods. Other than than that, it's ok I guess.

You think it would have been better if they just left it the regular maple? I guess they were trying to get the darker wood look of rosewood, weren't they?

That's the same way I saw it too. I would've really liked to have had a regular Maple fretboard SG Std. The look has to be what they were attempting to get with the Baked Maple.

I wonder what kind of woods you can actually use for a fretboard? I know they've done other ones besides maple and rosewood. Have you ever played a Steinberger or Modulus Graphite? They had those graphite necks, but I don't remember if that was the fretboard, too. I've played on both in Thoroughbred Music (now Sam Ash) back in the day.

I don't remember who it was, but someone told me, they can use any wood just about for a fretboard.

It looks like they probably should start doing that.

You'd think so wouldn't you. They must have a pretty decent number of necks to use, and the lumber to make into necks in stock for a while. I guess.

Yeah, I guess they probably have a good stockpile of all of that.

I sure would think so, but then again, they may have seen this coming with the trials, and tribulations of Gibson, and their woods.
