Hi all,

I apologize for the question from beginner ...

Two 4 strings standard jazz bass
both with maple neck and maple fingerboard.

the first to be made in mexico and weighs 4.2 Kg
the second to be made in the USA and weighs 4.0 Kg
The wood density justifies the difference of 200 Gr or is there something else?

Thank you,
Andrea.

The density and moisture content of the lumber is the likely culprit but the amount of routing beneath the pickguard may play a role as well. Also, lightweight components such as tuners and bridge saddles (as are often used in some MIA basses) might be a factor too.

One kind of finish will be heavier or lighter than another also. The more coats the heavier. Candy Apple Red is a multi coat finish for example.

Two pieces of the same species of wood can be different weights even if virtually all dimensions are exactly identical ... for reasons already indicated by Arjay.

I was not disagreeing with Arjay, just pointing out that different finishes can also make minor differences in weights.

Hi all,
thanks for the replies and sorry for the delay...

to be more precise,
the jazz bass Mexico is a 3 color sunburst
and the jazz bass America is a Olimpic White.

I personally do not think there is any difference in the cavities of the two jazz bass .. (I though I could not make precise measurements, my one and only idea)
different speech is for the active bass jazz ...
in that case the cavity in the area of the potentiometers is different to accommodate the active electronics circuit and in addition there are one or two batteries

definitely...
taking account of what is written above and taken for granted that the cavities of the two jazz are equal

the density of the wood +
seasoning of the wood +
type of painting +
the bridge and the mechanical

justify the 200Gr of difference between the two instruments?

Andrea.

Quite possibly.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply,
My little experience does not allow me to be safe in a case like this...

Not to worry. I wasn't saying you were.
