For those players with shorter fingers the 9.5" radius fretboard may be more comfortable to play.

Finding a bass that works best for you can be challenging. Ideally you would want to try several different ones. They will all be a little different in the way they play and sound. If you could find out online which basses have a 9 1/2 vs 12 radius neck then you will know which ones to look for in the store.

Budget plays a part too. Fender has some nice Made In Mexico and Squier (Indonesia) basses, so that may be the best place to start if you are truly a beginner. The Squier Vintage Modified basses are pretty nice and IMO maybe the best cheap bass on the market.

Just try to play as many as you can. Good luck with your search!

Gibson, and Epiphone basses usually have a 12" radius board on them.

Actually I would suggest a Precision Bass for a beginner because it has a simpler control array. I started on a Precision and have owned numerous Jazz Bass models but still prefer a Precision. Neck radius and width is a personal preference and something anyone can adjust to eventually. A 12 inch radius is much flatter and requires more reach but is easier to setup. 12 inch radius basses are often Asian imports because they are easier and faster to make and quicker to setup. Second point, do not skimp on the first amp. Get an amp to grow with, not a 15 watt practice amp that becomes useless in any sort of group environment. 100 watts minimum, also get some really good headphones to go with it to preserve the peace at home.

Hi all,

Thank you all for the replies...
I agree that the neck with radius of 9.5 is more convenient, especially for people who have small hands...
I have three bass,
one Jazz Standard with neck radius 9.5
one Precision bass with neck radius 9.5
one Deluxe Active Jazz with a neck radius 12

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0Bx9vbJ0uWLFLaUQzeVdEdzMzS2s

for my playing mode, the radius neck 9.5 allows me
to minimize the noise of the string on the fret...(I am a beginner and I have a touch a little heavy and i have small hands)

with the radius of 12 I am forced to be more gentle on the strings for not having noise...

PS: The setup is the same for all three bass

In conclusion, I also recommend to a beginner to start with a radius of 9.5
although I understand it can be a subjective thing ...

Andrea.
