First, I can't tell you how much fun I had swapping the bridge pickup for a Duncan Bassline SJB 3. I enjoy tinkering with electronic devices and my wife thinks I get way to much joy from using a soldering iron. After I fearlessly de-soldered the stock pickup and replaced it with Bassline, I shout with glee when the new pickup actually worked on the first attempt. More importantly, the annoying hum was completely gone! The difference in sound was truly astounding. My question: how many of you have a mixed set of pickups on their J Bass?

I'm looking to switch both pups in my '62 reissue Jazz because they are very trebley. I'm planning on ging with the duncan Antiquities series. I'm not going to mix the pick ups, I'd rather change both of them.

I, too, enjoy the satisfaction of working with wires and having the item actually work when I'm done. I'm looking forward to changing the pickups.

hey guys...i just did some mods on my 5 string marcus miller bass last night. following along with the original marcus miller bass i added the 5 string version of the badass II bridge. i also swapped out the pickups. i noticed you guys talking about duncans. i had a 24 fret 5 string for a bit and even with an aguilar preamp i didn't really like the tone of that bass. in my marcus miller 5 i went with lindy fralin pickups and let me tell you...my tech and myself have been studying the coveted 'new york tone' for quite a while and, though the MM5 is a phenominal instrument to begin with, it was absolute night and day from the original. the hum is gone and the passive tone is so much more like that of a vintage 70's jazz.

if you are a duncan fan then, by all means, use those. however, if you're open to options, check out the lindy fralins. you won't be disappointed and if you don't like em, i'll by em from ya!

take care

From what I understand the LF are more into the 60's sound of the Fender bass isn't it. I dig the '70s sound more. Not that it would matter, cuz the sound I need is the big thump...I play NYHC music, so EMG's for me.

the cool thing about the fralins is that if he winds you a set and you aren't satisfied with them he will re wind them until you are guaranteeing you the sound you want. he does both 60's and 70's windings and anything in between. definitely worth a try!

In the midst of all of this pickup swapping, it dawned on me that I run signal through a Pandora PX4D or a Toneport UX2, so what is the point of obsessing over pickup sound quality when I can model just about any pickup/amp/cab combo I can think of? At this point, I already had in my possession a pair of MIA J Bass Pickups, so I swapped those in and presto! I'm getting sweet tone now! The only drawback is if I forget/lose the Pandora or the battery dies, I'm screwed. Kinda come full circle on this one, but its been a lot of fun. Today I get to start a restoration project on a Yamaha RBX 765A.
