I recently acquired a beautiful 3-color sunburst '62 reissue Jazz bass.
The action is good and after a little at-home mainteneance, the concentric knobs no longer stick and now spin independent of the other. The one thing I cannot fix is the ultra treble sound I get from it. Even with the treble turned all the way down, I still have alot of amp EQ-ing to do to get a sound I can live with. I'm prepared to purchase new pick-ups, thinking this will fix the problem. I have my eyes on Duncan Antiquity series pups. Any ideas from anyone? Anyone share the same problems I have with this bass?

I'd change the pots out before I'd touch those PUPs.

A lot of people would leave a '62 alone - I'm not one of them btw. If you think there is an issue, get it fixed. If you want to get the Duncans, and this would be the excuse, do it 8) If you got the '62 as a collection, then leave it alone. I am one of those guys that buy a bass, if I think I can improve it and can afford to improve it, I would.

I'm not one to buy a guitar so that I can put more money into it, well, there is a '74 Strat I found that needed work, but that's a different story. Somehow, I didn't percieve the sound issue until I got the JB home and played it for a few weeks. Ally's opinion is that I should change the pots first. If that's a cheaper, more likely fix, I'm all for it. Would defective pots alter the tone?

Various capacitors can alter the tone dramatically. But as you said the pots were sticky personally I'd just get a whole new wiring harness. I really dunno how the PUPs could be too treble-y. Especially 62 RIs (the stack knob j basses were known for being quite dark compared to that of the vol/vol/tone j basses).

It would be cheaper but not a guaranteed fix, I wont pretend I'm an expert but to me it just seems the more likely thing to be causing your problem :)

Have you seeked advice on talkbass?

Thanks Ally.

I'm not an expert either and I've played another '62 RI after I bought the one I have and you're right, it sounded fuller and richer than mine. It can't be the amp because I play my '78 P-bass through the same amp (
SWR workingman's 15) and it sounds fantastic.

The concentric knobs were rubbing against each other so that when I adjusted the volume, for example, the tone knob also turned. I didn't mess with the pots, but simply removed the knobs and replaced them so they weren't rubbing against each other.

Is it on this site? or elsewhere? Thanks for the advise regarding talkbass. ailabe. iI didn't know that was av

www.talkbass.com - great bass community, lots of expertise on there.

Possibly something has gone wrong when you freed the pots? I'm not sure but again I'd be replacing them before anything else :)

Ally's the man, he has so much info. I take his advice, lots, even when I don't participate in the topic.

I have 2 62 reissues and I switched to the Fender Custom Shop Vintage PUP's Enough said. They are great and you get a nice vintage sound but remember the Jazz bass is what is is for the low end.If you want the really low end than look for the 62 P Bass reissue.

Good Luck!

Ally....
I had several luthiers from the talkbass.com site (luthiers corner) recommend I increase the capacitor on the neck pup pot from .05 to .1 One of them even suggested I change both of the capacitors to .1

I changed the strings from round to flats and took alot of time playing with the tone and volume knobs. In doing this I found the tone I was looking for. My problem was that didn't take the proper time needed to play with the pots, plus, I listened to a friend (non-bass player) who told me to open up all the tone pots to allow the truest pup sound the guitar can give. That may work for a Strat, but I think a bass needs special, tender loving care.

I'm not going to alter the guitar because I finally found some people who know what their talking about. Yes, I'm refering to the people here and at Talkbass.
Thanks again for all your help.

You were playing with the tone controls wide open?! No wonder dude! Haha, let this be a lesson, never listen to guitards ;) :P

In all seriousness I'm glad you sorted it. I guess the problem was more one to do with misunderstanding than anything technical.

I hope you like the flats too, I adore flats on my Jazz bass. Real old school thump!

Ally...

My dad used to tell me that I have to be smarter than the tool. I should have listened to him.. :D

Haha...guitard!!! That's funny!!

I'm starting to like the tone of the jazz bass. I'm glad I didn't mess with it. I was even considering returning it to the store. Not any more.

Again...thanks again for all your help.

Did you try adjusting the pickup height?

If you read the whole thread, he's figured out what's wrong already.
