Hi all,

I have a fender jazz bass made in Mexico built in 2015
I'm happy with the sound producing his pickup
I am a beginner and I play a bit of everything (no metal)
just that I would change the pickups with others who have a higher volume output without changing the bass sound ...
which brand and model do you recommend among these?
Seymour Duncan, DiMarzio, Fender and Bartolini.

PS: I have a Rumble500 head + 4x10 cabinet

Thank you all,
Andrea

Hi Andrea!
If you go with high output pickups the sound is most definitely going to change. No two ways about it. Especially with Bartolinis. They have their own signature tone and are very dark, and sound nothing like a Fender at all.

Since you have a Fender Rumble 500, I do not understand your desire for high output pickups? If you want classic Fender tone, you need to stick with Fender pickups such as the Custom Shop models.

I just checked and Fender is not offering their Custom Shop Jazz pickups for sale online. Which is kind of puzzling. Perhaps you can order them through a dealer, but they will be more expensive that way.

But for hot, high output pickups, nothing beats Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders.

Hi Linnin,
thanks for the reply.

I had the idea of changing the pickups at the Standard Jazz Bass mexico
because I have also one Standard Precision bass mexico
between the two bass the precision of course comes up with more volume ...
I wish that even the bass jazz had almost the same volume of Precision
so as not to intervene too much on the amp settings every time I change bass
of course maintaining the classic Fender tone

the maximum volume of rumble500 + 4x10 for me is very ok (i play only at home)

thanks for the Seymour link...

Andrea.

PS:
do you think these fender pickups have a tone and output similar to the pickups that are factory mounted on my Standard Jazz Mexico?

Good catch Andrea! I don't know why I didn't find those when I looked. Your pickups made in Mexico have ceramic-ferrite magnets. Nothing wrong with them, in fact that is exactly what DiMarzio uses.

Those American made Fenders have AlNiCo 2 magnets for a vintage 1960's Fender tone. I tend to doubt that they will have greater output to any appreciable degree, but they sure will sound GREAT!

Hi Linnin,

So you think if I put the Original Fender Jazz Bass pickups does not increase the output
but the tone be better?

Thanks for your help,
If you have other ideas please let me know

Andrea.

There *may* be a marginal increase in gain but more significantly, the overall tone will be as close to true vintage Fender as you can get.

I've built two Jazz Basses over the years and for both instruments I chose Fender's Custom Shop 62 set. To my ears, they sound beautiful.

Hi Arjay,

thanks for the reply
only one more question ...

my jazz bass pickups Mexico Standard has two different dimensions
I read on the Fender site that Fender pickups "Original Fender Jazz Bass" are factory mounted on the model "American Vintage Jazz Bass" ...

I can mount them on my Jazz Standard Mex

Thanks for all,
Andrea

Yes. US-made Jazz Bass pickups are identical in dimensions, just as the vintage pickups were. On some MIM instruments, two differently-sized pickups are used. It may be necessary to modify your body's pickup routs and pickguard to install the US pickups. It's not a major job and if you have the proper tools and some basic skills you can do this yourself. If not, any competent luthier can handle such work for a nominal fee.

While you have the bass apart you might also consider installing the brass shielding kit for the pickup routs and the control cavity. It will help eliminate any hum or buzz problems common with single-coil pickups.

Hi Arjay,

Thanks for your help
even if I do not get an increase of output
I think I'll put these pickups ...

I have tried searching the web a pdf with the pickup size "Original Fender Jazz Bass"
but I could not find anything ...
I hope it is correct ...
that way I do not have to change the seat of the pickup

Andrea.

I think it depends on the age of the bass. I've heard that the more recent MIM Jazz Basses (such as yours) are now compatible with US-made pickup sets as far as physical dimensions go.

This is also my understanding. That pickup set should drop right in without any modifications to the body.

Hi all,

pickups arrived.
I mounted them they are the perfect fit for my MIM Jazz bass
I have not had to change anything, just a little tweaking to pickguard
for the seat of the neck pickup, to have more space of movement for the adjustment of the pickup.

I also shielded cavities with adhesive copper
and I also changed all three potentiometers with the original spare parts by Fender CTS

The sound quality to be improved, but in my opinion the output to be slightly lower than the original pickups mexico, but I have no way to measure

here are some photos.

Wonderful photos, Andrea! Looks like you did an excellent job, and glad you like the tone. Just use the gain knob on your Rumble to adjust for different bass instrument volumes. I know you didn't want to do it that way, but that is just the way it is.
