Hello,

I’ve a rather specific search

I just bought for quite cheap a 1986 Fender Japan Jazz Bass Special (the original that as been reissued under the Duff McKagan Precision MIM form)

The bass has 3 identical knobs.

The original knobs are in two part with a knob and a cap with F logo (this is typical of 80’S knobs, I have an old British Sessionnette guitar amp that as the same two parts knobs and I used to have a Polytone with the same kind of knobs).

The Duff McKagan reissue have different knobs.

Does any one knows a seller where I can get a set of new knobs (or at least a set of knobs caps ) ?

Thanks

Luc

Rare part only used on Fender Japan Jazz Bass Special models made 1984 to 1987. This part has been discontinued for just shy of three decades.

Each knob actually consists of 3 parts. The end cap with the "F" in trademark script, the ribbed rubber sheathing that slips over the plastic shaft of the core and one piece of plastic that I call the core which attaches to the pot shaft that has numbers on the base.

What happens is the aging rubber on the ribbed sheath gets loose and this puts pressure on the cap which pops off. Usually the end caps fall off first, then the rubber sheathing follows shortly after and you are left with what you have now, the plastic core.

Now and then a set or single will show up on eBay. Unfortunately people who have any of them to spare know they are extremely scarce and charge accordingly, often selling them one at a time because lots of people only need one.

I found a full set of 3 currently for BID on eBay, but you aren't going to like the starting bid of $129.99! It is eBay item number 222176485934. If you want to have a look you can search eBay using that item number. It is the only item on there at this time that is the factory correct part.

I have seen individual ones sell previously for $15 to $30 each, but haven't looked lately so obviously they have gone up in value.

Even IF you manage to replace them, eventually the exact same thing is probably going to happen to the replacements. The end cap will fall off and you are right back where you are now. I might consider an alternate replacement myself like black colored dome knobs which are Fender part number 0062385049. Any Fender dealer can get them or you can order online from Darren Riley Dot Com. But in reality, there is a better chance I'd play it as is to maintain originality.

Dear Brotherdave

Once again I’m highly impressed by your thorough knowledge of anything Fender related, even no so common ones …
Well well....199$ for a set of knobs.... it’s more than half what I paid for the bass.. I think i’ll not bid :-)
Thanks again for you explanation, the goal was just to modestly try to put this old lady back in it’s original form but I’ll likely keep them as they are… as they work.

Luc

You can keep a check on eBay and might luck into some at a more reasonable price eventually, perhaps one or two at a time as someone parts out a MIJ Jazz Bass Special. For sure you will not find any new ones in any parts inventory I am aware of and believe me I have looked before. I would not pay that price for a knob that probably cost 25 cents to make either, but it is a very scarce part. Supply and demand is a cruel reality. If planning to gig with it the Fender black nickle dome knobs look pretty good on it. You could also use a set of Jazz Bass knobs.
