That's interesting. You know, I've seen a lot of Japanese Fender basses on the used market from Japan, recently. Of course, the shipping is pretty high. At least around the $150 range. I don't know if there are any other fees or not, though. Customs, etc.

I think as long as it is under a certain retail value (which I recall as something around $1,500) there are no import duties from Japan. Other countries may be different.

US Customs can hold it for a while and give it a good once over to make sure it is not a counterfeit. Customs has been cracking down on counterfeit instruments coming in from Asia and especially from China the last couple of years. Most of the faked instruments intercepted have been knockoffs of higher end Martin, Gibson and Paul Reed Smith branded Spanish guitars in both acoustic and electric versions. Fenders are never cited in their press releases.

However I do know that at one time prior to Fender setting up shop in China there was one China based operation that had a webpage selling bogus Fender USA basses made to order direct to the public worldwide. You knew they were knockoffs because they were one-quarter the cost of the real thing. This was way before Fender started their full scale China operation and before the big find in New Jersey. Surely Fender's China people have tracked down that particular counterfeit operation by now, but there is no way to know how many counterfeit Fender Basses they shipped with Made In USA decals before they stopped. I do not know anyone that bit on their copies myself.

Here is a photo purported to be part of 1 million dollars plus worth of fake guitars intercepted by US Customs in NJ released in May 2014.

I am not saying these Japanese Fenders are fakes, just saying be very careful.

I remember some Chinese sites around that sold fake. It was like Fender decals on Musicman or Rickenbacker bodies. Something ridiculous like that. :P They were like $38 but $400 to ship, or something like that. I certainly wouldn't mess with that stuff. The one thing I always thought was ironic when Ibanez had a warning about counterfeit Ibanez guitars, considering their origins.

The site I recall either made fabulous copies or used actual Fender instruments depicted. They were knocking off practically the entire Fender USA bass line of the day. Current models for the time and model specific colors also. It was freaky.

Another strange thing about the site I had seen was they also sold sex toys. I thought that was an odd combination of products. :P I forget if there was anything else besides those two things.
