Hi everyone, I recently acquired a MIJ Jazz Bass, which, according to the dating system was made in 89/90. The preview owner told me about three changes that was made: The tone pot that was changed (for another CTS), the bridge which was changed to a thru-body model, and the most weird one: It was added 2 bolts bellow the neck plate to “help” keep the neck in place, although the normal four bolts doesn’t show any sign of “weakness”. (this new holes can bee seen in the pic).

I have been searching for a while and could not find much info regarding this bass. I found on a website some Fender Japan catalogs from late 80’s, early 90’s, and they only have the RI62 and 75 models, no sign of the standard one. The bass plays very nice, I am just curious about some things:

Is it safe to say its a standard MIJ model?

Every Japanese “vintage white” bass I have seen has a white pickguard (normally the 62 RI). I wonder if the standard model was shipped with a black one (at least as an option)? The pg fits nice, just a bit tight in the neck area.

The bridge looks a lot like a Gotoh 203, but I couldn’t find a 203 with string-thru holes, does anyone knows if they made one at some point?

I am 99% certain it has a basswood body, right? If someone can identify by looking at the neck pocket.

Thank you so much for any information! Pics:

As far as I can tell, you have a Japanese made Fender Jazz bass.
It is impossible to identify wood via pictures but most of the Japanese Jazz basses of that type do have basswood bodies. They are fantastic instruments. I have two Squire branded Jazz basses in black and one Fender branded Japan made Jazz bass.
You have noted the changed features. I can't imagine why someone would put two more neck screws into the bass unless there was a real problem with the existing neck screws and even if that is the case, have the original screws fixed or the holes doweled and re-drilled.
I hope that you are happy with your bass. I think they are a great value for working bassists and I hope you have fun playing yours.

Oh yes I definitely love it! Plays great. It's my main bass now. I am glad the changes were at least well made, I just think the holes in the bridge looks a bit sharp. I have the impression it can break a string anytime, so I am keeping it top loaded until I can take it to a tech to smooth things a bit.

Thanks for your reply BCbassman.

Very nice looking bass. Love the color. Basswood is a good tone wood in my opinion.

Thanks Bubbalou, yes the color ended up getting a bit more yellow over the time.
