Would you be able to turn a highway one j bass into a Jaco Pastorius style bass by removing the pickgaurd? I have a MIM j bass but it has a big hole around the pickup and a route for the wires. I was thinking that an american bass would be solid wood under the pickgaurd. I was wondering if anybody knew. :?:

Take off the pg and find out. It's 10 - 13 screws for the jbass pu, depending on model.

to my knowledge Hwy-1s are NOT routed through the body. That is to say you should be able to take the PG off ala jaco. But make sure you check before any purchase!

They would make a great jaco bass, replace the bad $@! with a vintage style fender bridge, defret and epoxy the fretboard and voila!

Highway One's shouldn't have the rout/channel from the PU cavity to the control cavity so you could possibly do a Jaco version. It would just still have the pick guard screw holes of course. Another option is the made in Japan J bass bodies most of these similarly do NOT have the rout/channel from the PU cavity to the control cavity.

This leads me to a VERY SORE topic with Fender US made basses since both the P, J, and even the Deluxe J & Ps made in the US have this rout/channel from the PU cavity to the control cavity and to ADD insult the the neck pickup cavity is just a big rectangular PIT--not conforming to the shape of the pick up. The pick guard covers up this massive PIT in the body :x When you are paying over double for a US made vs Mexico made bass, you'd expect a little bit more craftsmanship/attention to detail than this. I understand why they did this since it speeds up production, but come on already its not like saving 3 minutes of time on each bass since they can now just drop in the PUs, pots, control knobs etc... vs having to "thread the wires thru the body and then make the connections is going to kill their production times. If they can keep the Highway One series intact, don't understand why they can't do this to the other US made basses. I hope Fender isn't pulling a fast one on its customers by saying the Highway One is US made when really its just USA ASSEMBLED. There have always been RUMORS that for some of the US made stuff, that all the parts are made/crafted in Mexico, but then assembled in Corona, CA. The more costly and labor intensive stuff is done in Mexico and the parts are put together in the US. I hope someone from Fender Corp i.e. Heath Bathgate, can chime in on this topic since its a really, really sore point with me

You basically have to bone up to the reissue basses now to not get these routs/channels. And the reissues now cost in the $1600-1700 range.

Sorry for the long diatribe, but this issue really get my goat

Thats ridiculus that the american standard has a route through the body, you'd think that for a thousand dollars they could take the time to thread the wires through the body.
