Hi,

I just bought an American Deluxe Jazz Bass with the passive/active switch. Fender doesn't really provide any useful documentation. If I leave the guitar plugged into my amp with the passive/active switch set to passive, will it still run the battery down?

Note to Fender: For $1,600 you could have included a detailed user manual!

Thanks everyone for any insight.

Typically, an active guitar is switched "on" when a cord is plugged into the jack. Some guitars have very low battery life expectancy regardless of being plugged in or not. Any electric/acoustic guitar I have ever owned needs a fresh battery almost every time I pick them up. My current Taylor seems to be marginally better on batteries than my old Takemine was. I have a 2013 American Deluxe Jazz Bass which I bought new in the spring of 2013. The battery is still fine. I do not leave it plugged in and I turn the switch to the passive mode before hanging the guitar on it's stand. My 2002 Victor Bailey Jazz does not have a passive mode. I unplug the guitar when it is not in use. I have replaced the batteries twice since buying the guitar new in 2002.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
