I seem to remember that the ad had a 4x5", either a 2x10" or a 4x10" and a 2x15" being a Stu fan at the time I dreamed of that rig.

I have tried one of this Marcus Miller Sire's at a Talkbass meet up. It was nice but I've been playing 6 string basses since 2002 and 4 strings just feel like toys to me. I don't mean to sound elitist it's just when you get used to a neck that size and the concentrated range (2 octaves and a 4th in one position) it's kind of like going from a grand piano to a Casio in terms of feel.

Yeah, Guitar Center and Musicians Friend are last ditch choices for me too. Even the employees refer to it as Guitarget.

It's a perfect scam though from my perspective. I hate to get too political but I'm making an exception here:

I started looking at what I spent the most on at GC and it turned out to be instructional materials like books and DVD's. Then realizing that Romney and company own 60% of GC something clicked to me not to sound like a conspiracy theorist. In Republican Budgets 2 of the first things to get cut are education and the arts. In most school budgets it's Music Education.

Cut funding for free music education in schools including access to instruments and instructional materials, then buy out the 2 biggest music retailers so you can profit off it.

Yeah, I think we're talking about the same ad. I think he was still playing those Philip Kubicki Factor basses, too. That's another blast from the past. I looked that up to make sure I got the spelling right, and come to find out, the dude is still making those: https://kubicki.com/ I remember some guy I went to high school with actually had one.

Playing 6 string bass for that long, I imagine that would seem like that. I've never really had much opportunity to mess around those, except in a music shop, years ago. How long did it take you to get used to the neck on those?

Very cool! I also have a GL jazz bass, though mine has a white pickguard. I think it's from around 2008.

A couple of months. I slowly phased it into my practice schedule and phased out the 5 string Yamaha I was playing. I kinda had to say "This is my thing now" and use it exclusively. Right now I'm working on learning my modes in some type of context so I will loop chords and practice modes against them.

Since my work schedule is kind hectic right now (7 days a week in the ICU) I haven't had time to do much of anything but am in the process of learning Ableton and since I'm not a keyboardist I think I'm looking at a lot of drawing in MIDI information and multi tracked bass so having the range will come in handy. It seems to work for Thundercat.

I often have said that myself, with some of my crap, like the Squier Jazz.

Isn't it too easy to get into playing the same bass more than the other, or others?

Well, I have some in different parts of the house, and a couple of those are near where I usually hang out, and the rest are on another floor, where the studio used to be, so they are sort of out of sight, out of mind. Although, I did bring down the Jazz last week and plugged it into the Fender amp. Mainly, I'll play on the violin bass when I'm in the living room, watching a movie or something. I have the Ibanez in the office with the Fender amp, so I'll play that there, although sometimes I'll play the Ibanez when watching TV. The Ibanez acoustic bass is just sitting in another room besides that, and occasionally I'll pick that up. I also have a Telecaster next to the Ibanez, but I rarely pick that up, unless I need to, or feel like playing guitar. I've been thinking about getting some light gauge flats to try and put on the Peavey Zodiac bass, and see if I can get that thing going again. It has a nice feeling neck with a maple board, and P and J pickups. Pretty beefy instrument, too. I'd really be curious to run that through the Ampeg.

My amp decision is really easy. One amp, that's what I play through. And, it stays where it's at.

Yeah, I pretty much use one amp with the Fender, unless I'm out gigging, then I move over to the other rig, which is now the Ampeg, and the Orange previously. The Fender is kind of a pain in the arse to move around a lot, although I did do it a few times.

Better than those Acoustic, Ampeg monsters of the past.

That's true. There wasn't any Class D 5 pound amps and Neo speakers back then, was there? Funny thing is going strong, because it still works, and sounds good.

No, even the 2X12 combos were tube bases amps in them. Heavy as hell also. I think that was a determining factor in the trend of going to heads, and cabs, and not staying with a heavy combo.

I suppose the separate head and cab was a more practical application for that, especially when you had bigger rooms to play in, and you could add additional cabs, etc. Plus, if one part of a stack is down, the whole thing wouldn't be, like typically would happen with a combo amp, I think.

Jason Newstead from Metallica tore his bicep catching "The SVT" the one that was used by Cliff Burton before him as it fell off the top of an 8x10 and it took him a few years to heal.
