Well, I did play it through the Fender, but I didn't hook up the Ampeg. Either way, it's actually been a long time since it's even been plugged in to begin with.

You have to start somewhere. The Fender, I would think, will give you a good sound, and idea of what the you're dealing with the Jazz, or any other bass for that matter. Fender amps do well. I would like to know how the Ampeg PF 800 serves your sounds.

Well, I'll be using the Ampeg soon enough, I think. When the EP starts getting promoted, and things like that, then there will be shows. I guess there's no point in playing any shows until that comes out, which does make sense. It's been almost a year since I did play a show, though. I have a feeling things are going to get busy on that end, soon enough.

Sounds good. Don't rush your playing of the new music.

I used the GL through the Super Bassman this afternoon to check everything out on it.

Really fine. Fine tuning will be tomorrow, today was just an overall system check to be sure it was totally functional. Before I set in place, I ran it on standby, watched the Auto Bias System running. When I saw it was ok, I set it in place, plugged in the jazz. Just a couple minor adjustments for the day, and it was a go! Nice to have a mute as well as the standby.

Mute is a nice addition, in case you need to unplug and plug back in. I used it when I was trying out the Ampeg and switched basses, so I don't have to deal with any pops from doing that. I guess the main reason they have that is so you can silent tune, if you have that type of tuner hooked up to your rig.

How does that Auto Bias thing even work? What exactly doe it even look for, do you know? Is it some sort of thing that has to do with electrical currents, or something? I really don't know a hell of a lot about tube amps, other than basic material. I never messed with that stuff.

To start with, I'm not an electrician, but I'll try to not mess you up on this.
What Bias in a tube is, the current running through it. Tubes need to be kept at a constant flow of current. Different Bias levels, control the sound of the amp. At a lower Bias, it lets the amp put out a more mellow tone, and allows the tubes to last longer. A mid Bias will give it a more average, middle tone, and the tubes are still not pushed that hard. The upper Bias levels will, (you guessed it), give the amp a more prominent crunch, and will get very hot, and have a shorter working life. Higher heat breaks down tubes quicker.

The Auto Bias System, on the Fender, has three Bias settings on it , so the level of the current can be set by the user. Middle setting is the pretty much the average setting from Fender. As the amp is powered up, the Auto Bias monitors the current to the power tubes. It not only monitors, it also works to keep the flow of the current at a constant to the setting. That keeps the tubes running smoother, and extends their life. The Auto Bias meter shows the green blips as it checks each tube while powered. If a yellow blip appears, something is starting to have an issue. The red blips, Yep! You guessed it. I think it's a useful working monitor. It takes some, or a lot of the guessing for if there's a problem with the power tubes, or which one tube is in jeopardy.
I hope I didn't screw you up. Getting match sets of tubes is pretty much a must anymore.

Actually, I understand that pretty well. Come to think about it, I have read somewhere that if you're really pushing your amp hard, that does effect the life of the tubes. I guess too much distortion isn't that good for them, or something like that. That's good that they have that feature for it, then. I'm surprised Ampeg does not do that, as well.

Ampeg has a setting that you can adjust to do some setting on the Bias, but not the deeper monitoring that the Fender has. The Ampeg tube SVT CL head has it, as wells the other 300 watt heads. They're setting is a dial that is rotated until a green light comes on. Better than nothing, but not a fine Bias setup as the Fender system.

I suppose something is better than nothing, but the Fender does seem like a really good feature to have.

I believe so too. That's the main reason I did another Super Bassman over the SVT CL. Both of them are 300 Watts, cost the same, but the Fender is lighter, has the Auto Bias System that works, and it has an 8 ohm impedance setting the SVT CL doesn't have. I kinda' like the Fender tube sound too. Maybe some of that old SUNN is still in there.

That does sound good. You know, it wouldn't surprise me that they incorporated some of that Sunn tech in these amps. I remember when they started doing amps after shutting Sunn down, they were just rebadged with the Fender logo, I think.

I'd like to have some of the SUNN's soul in my Super Bassman.
