When did you wind up going to Vietnam? Right after high school? I know we withdrew from there in January of 1973, so that was 3 years from that point.

So basically right at the end of it, then. I wonder when they stopped the draft, then?

My lottery number was 15. I was suppose to be inducted in 1970 right after high school. Instead, they inducted up to whatever. Then for the next two years, They weren't sure if they needed, or wanted anymore inductees. Then I got my induction notice. They took up to, and including number 15. Lucky me after two years of doing a life.

I remember registering for Selective Service when I turned 18, but luckily, they weren't doing any sort of a draft, although the first Gulf War was going on, which had me a little worried. Then again, if our military was pretty big at that time, anyway. We'd probably be in some serious situation like World War 3, if they were going to draft anybody, I imagine.

At least you can say that you made it back in one piece, and you're a survivor. Sadly, there were plenty who didn't, though.

Yeah,............... 58,000 plus didn't. What a waste of some fine folks too.
I was always proud state I was a USA. A draftee. The majority of my platoon were RA, regular army. Myself, and the other two USA's talked a little louder, and had a major swagger when we did things. The Drill Sargent's knew who we were, and got along with us a bit better. I think because we were better, and did a job we were inducted into, as compared to joined up to do.

I think the fact that you even made it back proves that.

My other two USA's didn't. The three of us were #15, so that meant we were Feb. 12, 1952. We were also Dragon's, 1952 born in the year of the Dragon. We were suppose to have had some sort of life aura protecting us. I must have had it, Bob, and Larry went too quick. Three days apart from each other.

The draft number was in relation to your birthday?

They drew a number for every day of that year. For my birthday, Feb. 21, 1952 draw, it was the 15th drawn. It was in a way, the way I almost expected it to go. The three, or four years before my 1952 draw, my Feb. 21st was getting lower numbers going down. That was just luck of the draw.

I remember when I lived in Brandon, Florida, I worked at this engraving shop where one of the guys that worked there was telling me about the whole lottery system they had with the draft, but he had a higher number so he didn't get picked, so he didn't go. That was the first time I even ever heard about them even doing that. It wasn't like that war was a huge subject discussed in history class in school. In fact, it was barely mentioned at all in the text books.

It wasn't a popular subject, or issue.

I noticed that, like it was some dirty little secret, and you guys that made it back were treated like crap, too.

Anyway, to get back on topic, how's the Geddy Lee still doing for you?

The USA GL is on it's way to a new house, along with the Spl. Ed. Dlx. PJ Precision. I'n now totally playing short scale. Long scale is getting to be a bit much of a stretch for these older fingers anymore.
