I had a Music Mann Bass that I liked, but it was Active only.

When did you have that one?

Two and half to three years ago. A Fender Am. Std. Jazz was it's replacement. What a surprise right?

I didn't know you would be into getting a Music Man bass, from what you usually like to play. Was that something that you decided to check out on a whim because it was something different? My only experience with one was trying one out in a Thoroughbred Music shop in Clearwater, Florida back around 1994, or so. I really don't remember a hell of a lot about it, other than maybe the neck feeling a lot different to me, as well as obviously sounding different, than say my Precision Bass I had.

It sounded ok with the Humbucking on it. I just didn't like the Active on it.

Yeah, I think if you're more into a 60's sound, active doesn't really work for that, or at least I think. I mean I wouldn't use one for the 60's garage/psychedelic project we have going, that's for sure. It's not 100% reproduction of that genre, since we don't have that type of gear, but heavily influenced as much as we can. I think I'll probably be using the violin bass for that, since it has that hollow-body thud to it.

60's Sounds for me is Right On. the other thing that I didn't care for on the Music Man basses, the wasn't a switch to activate, or de-activate the Active mode. That's what I really like about the USA GL Jazz's sound. The 60's-70's sound. The full bass tones are there. Image

As well it should. Although, there actually was experiments going on with active electronics starting in the late 60's. Alembic is the prime example of that. Jack Casady had a Guild Starfire bass modified with electronics that Alembic made. I think the Grateful Dead got into that, too. I know they had that monster PA system that had all of those speakers stacked sky high and amps.

I don't think that big PA did a thing. Myself, I can't see using an active bass that goes dead without a battery, or a switch to bring into a passive mode.

When I was using the Precision Bass Lyte, which has active electronics, I definitely carried spare batteries with me. I made that mistake once, when I had a rehearsal in NYC and I didn't have any. Sure enough, the battery died off in the bass, or was weak enough not to function well, and I sounded like distorted arse. After that, I didn't repeat that mistake, but it doesn't matter now, since I have passive basses. I still carry spare batteries because I use effects pedals, too. Although, it's not a big idea if those don't work, since I can get away without them.

The way these batteries today die off and leak out isn't good either.

I haven't had any problems with them leaking, at least. Not that I recall, at least as long as I've lived up here.

I played the Jazz more the other day, and it's hard to stop playing it. It sounded good through the combo with 2 10's, but the 15" Neo gives it a better sound. The room was shaking a bit.

That's always best when the room shakes. I was jamming out with my Jazz, too. I'll pick it up for a few minutes before I turn in for the day, since it's right there next to the bedroom. I have yet to get the jack fixed on it, but I still like to pick it up and noodle around with it, even though I'm not using it as a main bass right now. It's still a great player, albeit a different feel than the Precision Bass.

I'm thinking when I get it fixed, I'll probably gig with it as a backup, or maybe just trade off from that and the Precision. If I decided to stick with the rounds on the P Bass, I might just go ahead and put a set on there, too. That way, I can keep a consistent tone between the two going into the same amp, as well as feel of the strings.

It's good you have a few options to go with. I still like playing a Jazz as my go to bass.
