Hello,

I'm switching my equipment back to passive Fender basses, and I currently use a American Std Precision that I'm totally in love with.

I would like to add a JB to my Precision.
I have a proposition for an exchange of my Warwick Corvette active with a 2009 MIA JB AVRI 62 (with the two stacked knobs one for each pickup)

Questions :

- The specific set of controls aside, what are the differences between an AVRI62 and an American Std ?
- Do the AVRI and American Std share the same parts ? (neck pocket, pickguards..)
- Are the AVRI better, lower, equal quality compared to American Std ?

Thanks in advance

Luc
Thanks in advance

I would say that overall build quality to be equal.
The biggest major difference is in the neck radius: 7 1/4" vintage (more curve on the fretboard) vs. the flatter modern 9 1/2" radius. I have a 2012 American Standard Jazz and a '76 Precision (7 1/4) and I can go back and forth between the two easily. Some people just can't. I will say that I find the modern 9 1/2" neck radius more comfortable to play and can provide a faster action.
I like the modern Fender higher mass bridge better. I also prefer alder to ash as a body tone wood. So to me the American Standard is more desirable.

I agree with you about the radius. I had a G&L SB-2 with a 7 "+ radius. The flatter 9.5" on the newer fenders feel better for my short fingers, than the 7"+.

I agree with linnin about the build. The quality of the AVRIs I have is excellent, although I do not have a 62 from 09. To me, the trade you suggest should be a done deal.

The stacked knobs are sometimes a bit problematic, they have a tendency to want to move together if not adjusted properly. Your 09 should have an offset washer between, but it still needs to be properly adjusted. My 60J and 61J require occasional adjustment but my FCSRI60 has never needed attention since my first adjustment when it arrived, and that is a couple years at least, and many hours. I love all three, and hope I am not making this sound like a bigger deal than it is. Having volume and tone on each pup, in one location, is really cool for simple people like me.

Again, I would make the trade in a heartbeat, but I I am a fan of Fender basses, and love stackers.

I am also a huge fan of the stack knob 62 ri's. Greater tonal variation, and those reissues have a nice dark growl to them. I own two of them.

I'm also a big fan of the stack-knob Jazz Bass reissues, having one as my #1 electric bass since 1988.

The bass in the photo looks like it's been modified as the knobs are not original. You may want to inquire about any modifications before making that trade.

The American Standards do have graphite reinforcement bars on the neck.

I have a 2006 AVRI Jazz Bass and a 2012 Am. Std. Jazz Bass.

Built quality is nearly equal but the feel is completely different. Aside from the radius issue, back of the neck on AVRI's is heavily gloss lacquering compared to satin on the Am. Std.s.

The vintage pups tend to hum a little but the tone is unmatched.

I have an American Standard Jazz (2012).

It has made me realise two things:
- I am going all passive then using external pre-amps
- you really need to have a solid case for spending more - it will be a long long time before the quality of bass is my limiting factor.

The American Standards have everything you need, nothing you don't:
- excellent passive pups
- graphite support rods
- string-through bridge
- a solid bridge.
