Hello,
I was hoping to find some help as I am upgrading my 1998 MIM Jazz Bass Guitar.

I recently purchased a set of Custom Shop 60s Pickups. The schematics shows the red dot pick up in the back towards the bridge (pickup cutout shape), and the blue dot in the front (under the pick guard).
The problem I am having is the red dot (lead) pickup cover is slightly larger than the cut out hole. The blue dot fits just fine but is reverse from the schematics drawing #0073369000. Has anyone else experienced this? or is the schematics wrong.

I dont see much difference in EQ in the outside of the box. Just that the neck (I'm assuming the blue dot) resistance is 7.1K with an inductance of 3.18h, and the bridge (again assuming red dot) has a resistance of 7.4k and inductance of 3.25h.

Will it matter if I switch them around? ***EDIT: Looks like I can't switch them around as it wont fit the pick guard slot.

Thanks in advance,
Mez

Hello,
Not sure how active this message board was and I grew impatient and busted out the Dremel. :twisted:
I was able to mill out one side slightly and fit the pickup in the slot. I don't think that I'm out of alignment with the strings but we'll see when it all comes together.

FYI. $hitty Mexican pickups are both the same size.

Not one day since you post and we where on holiday weekend .

It alway take few days before a good answer.

One thing is sure , you must put the pickups the way they should.

First you write;
"The problem I am having is the red dot (lead) pickup cover is slightly larger than the cut out hole."

And now you write ;
" FYI. $hitty Mexican pickups are both the same size. "

I don't understand :(

IIRC the early Ensenada-made Jazz Basses used two identically-sized pickups whereas the original (vintage) JB's and the US-assembled re-issues all used a slightly wider bridge pickup (which accounts for the difficulty you're having with installing the upgraded CS shop pickups). The only remedy is to do precisely as you have done -- enlarge the rout for the bridge pickup slightly to provide the necessary clearance. A table router is recommended but careful work with a dremel tool will accomplish the task as well.

Thanks, Stratele.

I discovered the pickup discrepancy the hard way while building my second Jazz Bass. The first one's body was a 2003 or 2004 MIM '60s re-issue and there were no problems installing the US pickups. But the second bass had a MIM Standard body from 1999, when the Mexican instruments were still using the one-size-fits-all pickups. When it was time to install the CS 62 pickup set, I was horrified to discover the "dirty little secret". Thankfully a friend with a table router came to my rescue and everything turned out fine.
