So I tried out a 2014 Geddy Lee model Jazz Bass (MIM) at my local music store.

I realized the neck profile is a lot thicker than the previous models, which has the infamous skinny width and thinner profile. The nut width is still the same but it feels like there is more wood on the back of the neck than the CIJ/MIJ ones.

I like the new MIM necks a lot. Is there a reason why they decided to change the neck profiles? I love it. I want one for my own Geddy bass. It's been haunting me because it's the perfect feeling for my small hands!!

Long live the Geddy Lee bass!

My brother plays a MIJ Geddy Lee and according to his observations, the neck feels slimmer than most MIM and MIA Jazz Basses. Perhaps the Ensenada-built GL's feature a more robust profile.

Maybe they're making the necks thicker to be more in line spec wise with the current specs on Geddies bass. Geddies #1 '72 black jazz bass is on it's 3rd neck .... the current neck that was made for him in 2009/ 2010 by custom shop & is thicker with pearl block markers ... this is also the case with the USA Geddy Lee
Jazz bass which features all the current tweaking that's been done to #1 including one of the pickups being rewound. Just a thought.

Third neck? Which was his first neck??

I do like the new MIM Geddy necks. They feel great to me but too bad I can't order one separately. Come on, Fender, take my money!!!

The thin neck with Black markers was the first neck .... try Googling for Geddy Lee interviews with Bassplayer & Vintage guitar from the Clockwork Angels tour .. very informative & both interviews talk with Geddies tech ... there's some cool photos of the basses used on that tour ..

I saw and read those. They were indeed fantastic reads and so much fun to learn about.

What was his second neck?

I'm not sure when he got the 2nd neck, though I'm pretty sure his Artist
Model Geddy Lee Jazz bass was in stores at this point. I'm going to guess that Geddy had to get the 3rd neck after the 2007 Snakes & Arrows tour because He had the back of the neck sanded on that tour .. maybe there were issues from doing this.

So basically the first and second necks are identical except the second was just a replacement before he changed it up a little regarding appearance and shape?

I personally like the black marker neck more than his current neck but I can't deny that the neck on the USA Geddy's feel amazing.

Yes the first 2 necks on Geddy's bass were the same thickness. I have a 2006 CIJ Geddy Lee Jazz Bass & a USA Geddy Lee Jazz bass & I have played a few MIM Geddy Lee Jazz basses.. both or rather all versions are really nice playing basses you can't go wrong .... I've said many times here on the forum that they're a lit of bang for the buck.

The MIM ones play nice but the CIJs have the best overall quality

I had a CIJ-GLJ for a while. It was a smokin' nice unit. Spanky, growly and a neck that played like butter. Ex took it in the settlement.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I used to own CIJ Geddy, but had to sell it. Very nice bass, it was.

I just bought the MIM version, and I don't think that there's that much of a difference(if memory serves) between the two.
The bridge has changed and there's one screw "missing" between the middle PU and the neck.

The neck feels pretty much the same, just absolutely joy to play. Put on on some TI-Flats and tuned down a whole step, and it's just grooves and growls like no another bass.

Had a few basses between these two, but now I'm back with Fender, and I'm happy as a bass player can be :D

I've got nothing bad to say about the MIM version.

Originally bought AMStd Pbass, but that was a total dog, so I send it back and got the GL instead, and had some change in my pocket to buy some home recording stuff and some beer
