Hi experts!

Just bought used JB MIM 2001 in Midnight Wine (I suppose). Seller told me that pickups has been replaced with ones from some Japanese 75 reissue model.

I took some pics. Is anybody can confirm that these p/ups are really from MIJ JB and the wiring is proper (controls work as expected).

Thank you in advance!

Who is manufacturer of pickups for Japanese Jazz Basses - Gotoh? Or do Fender have its own manufacture there, in Japan?

If they are actually MIJ, then yes they are of Japanese manufacture by contract as were all the MIJ & CIJ Fenders. Fender has chosen not to renew the contracts and no new Japanese Fenders are being legally made. The main weakness in the Japanese made Fenders were their electronics.

Do you like the sound of the p'ups you have? If so just keep them as is. If not then buy and install these Fender Custom Shop Jazz P'ups.

They come stock in American Standard Jazz basses since 2012. They are the very best sounding Jazz Bass pickups that I have ever heard, and I'll never change mine for anything else. Yes, they're that good.

Slip, to your question, I am not the guy. My MIJ knowledge lies in the Performer, and the Heartfield DR and Prophesy lines. These pups are not of that period, but the base on these is unique enough that I am hopeful a member will have a response to you.

Japan went through an interesting cycle. The first basses coming out were pretty cheap, poor finish, poor electronics. But they got better, and actually continued to improve, IMO, until the Yen started losing value to the Dollar. These were GOOD basses. At this time, a whole lot of guitars and basses were being made there, from nearly all major manufacturers, but the monetary change made their products noncompetitive in the USA, and in European markets, as well. From that point, quality slipped, trying to stay competitive. Some say that has now improved, but again, that is outside of my knowledge.

There are many opinions about where that quality is today. I think the pickups you have pictured are new(er), and if they are indeed Japanese, they took part in the reissues of earlier basses, primarily artist series and very early USA models. But this is not a fact, just my opinion.

All that being said. You have a MIM bass that, at this time, does not appear to have any collectible market forthcoming. Nice thing is, you will not be able to throw that in my face when the bass is worth a million dollars fifty years from now, unless you come with a shovel.

Bottom line, try both pups and find out which one sounds best to you. Neither is of any special value, so go with your ear. And, as mentioned by others, if neither fits your ear, try transplanting some nice vintage pups. I am 100% a Fender guy, but there are other nice pups out there too. One of my favorites now wears Lindy Fralins. So enjoy.

Sorry for being so windy. Hope I have helped.
