In this thread I am going to do two Custom Strat Plus builds at the same time. One will be this New old Stock 1991 Strat Plus.

And the other will be this Pewter Strat Plus body....still need to decide on a neck for it, but most likely Rosewood as the other Plus has Maple.

Well, I wish I would have taken pictures step-by-step wiring of the pickguard assemblies. These are built using Chrome Dome Lace Sensors, two reds in the bridge with a Ultra mini-switch, and a hot gold in the middle. I am using a Fender Single-Wafer Super-Switch for Neck+Bridge for position #3. One setup has a Seth Lover Humbucker, which is like a real vintage 50 humbucker down to the windings and materials, and the other a DiMarzio DP190 Air Norton Humbucker which also has the sound of the late 1950s humbucker but with the Airbucker technology uses more reliable full-strength Alnico 5 magnets—both have a mini-switch to split the humbucker so you can get more single coils sounds when mixed with the middle pickup:

These are a pretty cool setup as they retain all the Strat quack and honk, yet give a nice full humbucker tone in the neck. This allows jazz and blues and all those lovely humbucker tones that Les Paul people rave about. The bridge is equally as good since the two red Domes have a very hot humbucker tone two, but and be true single coils to give the quack and funk sound. Not only do they sound great, but have a nice esthetic look as well.

I tire to keep the wiring very clean.

The Pewter will look great with the setup using the Seth lover pickup:

More to come soon!!!

The Black one is pretty sweet looking the way it is. Is the wilkinson nut brushed? almost looks chrome in that pic.

Hey Jason, yeppers, the nut is brushed, it is just very clean. I could not believe when I picked up this 91 Plus. Plastic still on the pickguard and back trem plate. The guy just never played it. He bought it and then stuck it under his bed....since 1991! I feel a little bit like I should not do this, but truth is, it is a much better guitar with this other setup in it. I just got it together and will snap some picts tomorrow or the next day. Really sweet.

Oh too cool! :D :D :D

And then will you juggle them whilst riding a unicycle and whistling Yankee Doodle? 8)

Ladies and gentlemen, Xhefri is not the only fella here who can do fabulous quality electrics. But on the other hand, you'll never see it done better!

It's popcorn time. Sit back and enjoy... :D

Cheers - C

+1

Now this guy knows how to put a Strat together. I've spent many an hour drooling over the custom strats on his website. Love the look of the Chrome Sensors, very tasty indeed. I'm very much looking forward to how this progresses!

Andy

P.S. Nice pickguards you have there Jeff

Well, the black 1991 Plus was pretty easy since it was NOS, so it was a simple matter of installing the pickgaurd assembly and then doing a quick setup. The action on this is wonderful and the maple neck is flawless. I do see some slight shrinking in the finish from age, but not bad. The Pewter Plus is up next!

OK! Time to move forward on the Pewter Strat. First thing that needs to be done is to choose a neck. I have two that will work. One is a E9 (89 or 90) and the other a N1 (90-91) The body is a 1990 so both will work in the parameters of how fender does things! I like matching neck and bodies close to the same date just for compunction sake, not that it really matters as I have fitted things a like a 1990 body with a 1996 neck and it was a perfect fit. Here are my choices:
Image

After a closer look, I see the N1 neck (1991) was really made (or finished) May 21st, of 1992. This goes to show that Fender serial number can range 2 years. I have seen N1xxxx be 1990-1992! So I will use the E9 neck as it is closer to the date on the body. The frets on it show almost no wear, so that is a plus too (no pun intended).
Image
Image

It proves to be a really snug fit in the neck socket, which is another plus. A good tight fit is what one wants and it does look good on the body:
Image
Image

Again, here is the work bench. I think one of you guys called it a big cat scratching post!!!! and a pict of some other projects for down the road.
Image
Image

Next I will be doing a detailed fret polishing and cleaning, then get it mounted up on the body. Then on to wiring and bridge selection.
