So I'm thinking about buying an American Deluxe Strat FMT. Has anyone out there played one or seen it in person or heard anything about them? I've been making the rounds at all of my local music stores and no one has had it. The flame maple top and the ebony fingerboard make it awfully enticing but I'm afraid to buy it without knowing much about it. I'm sure that at the $1400 price point, fender wouldn't be putting out a "bad" product but if anyone could help me out that would be great!

Also, is it a good decision to buy a strat with a humbucker in the bridge? I don't know why but that pickup configuration feels almost like a betrayal to me.

American Deluxe FMT vs. American Deluxe... what do you think?

mjsonne,

I did not vote because I own and enjoy both, so here is my take for what it's worth.

You will not go wrong with either, both of mine have the S-1 system. Aside from the aesthetics, what sticks out the most on the FMT are the PUP's with the DH-1 I get a decent growl and the middle and neck are also wound a bit hotter to compensate for the bridge PUP.

The FMT also has a "C" neck while my Strat has a "V" neck, I prefer the "V" but it isn't a deal breaker.

Either one will give years of pleasure and plenty of tonal options, the Strat will look more traditional with the pickguard vs. the FMT without one. It all boils down to you and what you like, if you can play both that would be a plus, if you can't I don't think you'll go wrong with either. They are both great axes.

I have the Amber Flame, actually my wife bought it for me as a surprise after she saw me researching it online.

If I were to buy another one today I would buy the Tobacco Burst for sure, it's stunning.

matt101590,

i think that the deluxe telecaster is a great guitar. i've played a bunch of them and i think that they're awesome. the only reason that i'm not getting one of those is that i am mainly a lead player and i like the access to the upper register on the strat more.

w-road28,

thats quite a nice gift! have u seen the tobacco sunburst in person? i'm always with sunbursts that the color isnt as true to the website picture and one would want. thats why i'm leaning toward the amber, because they can't possibly mess it up.

mjsonne,

Yes, I have played one at a local store. The color is almost dead on to the picture in the link below. ( Click on the small picture to enlarge )

Having seen and played both, I want both. Like I said you can't go wrong.

I'm a happy owner of a 2004 blue FMT. Stunning guitar. The ebony is silky smooth. I love the guitar and really appreciate how it's got a classic Strat look with some streamlined, modern touches. The only thing I'd say look out for is that it tends to have a darker, more modern sound to it overall. If you're looking for a more vintage tone I may look into a regular AM DLX with an all maple fretboard for a little more "spank."

basically, the sound i want could best be described as a hybrid of john mayer and david gilmour. i really like mayer's mid range and gilmour's tone and sustain. i also want a real beefy sound. which do you think could accomplish it better?
