Hello from London,

Huge Fender fan and have just started collecting. I was offered a supposed 1984 American Strat and could really do with some help determining if its the real deal please.

I wont have the opportunity to take the guitar apart before parting with my cash... so can only go on the look and feel.

Thank you for your time, much appreciated.

Not really made in 1984 based on the 2 point trem which was introduced in 1986. Fender used what was lying around the plant to build guitars at the time. This meant using old decals with serial numbers from previous years until they ran out.

It is a very nice guitar pictured in your post. You would need to remove the neck to see a date stamp on the end of it to really get a good year of manufacture.

Thank you! So im guessing if the seller dosent let me take the neck off, it still should have been manufactured between 86 and 88 possibly? Also wasnt sure if your based in the States, but wondered if you knew the cost for a guitar like this please?

Without checking with guitardaterproject.com I'd say, it's built between '84 and '88, since they used the E4 serial numbers in that time.

Judged by the trem, it's rather '86 to '88.

Everything looks perfectly fine to me, referring to the pictures you posted.

It's an early American Standard.....so it would be built in either late '86 or early '87. They had the E4 serial numbers because Fender had a large supply of decals on hand.

Many thanks for the information...

Would you say this guitar is worth £600 / $1000?

All the best,
Sam

No way, Sam!
Dunno 'bout the UK but these American strats go for 600 to 700 Euros here in Germany, depending on color (including rectangular Fender case or Fender tweed case).

Just bought one 3 or 4 weeks ago from an instrument sales man (which usually is a little more expensive than buying from private) and I payed 675,- Euros, with black Fender case, on eBay.
It's an '88 American Standard.

There were two others for 630 and 680 Euros during the past 2 months. All of them white.
(because I was looking for a white one)
