I am looking at an American Vintage 70s guitar but unsure if its the USA made or Mexican made Classic 70s guitar. What would the seriel number be for the USA made?

The mexican made have the leading M.
USA model has just one string tree and not the tinted neck the mexican has.

All the best,
Robin

Hi

If the serial number has MX or MZ at the beginning its a Mexican made guitar. Have a look at the page below for info on serial numbers. You can also send the serial number to consumerrelations@fender.com and they will reply with the spec of your guitar.

Since no one addressed the USA AV '70s Strat - it will have a serial number starting with a "V" at the top of the neck plate. I don't believe these say "Made in USA" on them anywhere as they are recreating the early 70s look. As everyone else has described the MIMs have a serial number decal starting with an "M" (or an "MX" after the middle of 2010) on the back of the headstock. They will also say "Made in Mexico" on the back of the headstock.

+1

My 1998 and 1999 '50s Classic Series Strats both have MN-prefixed serials.
