Is this true
"this is a 1996 made in mexico strat. this is one of the few years that the necks and bodies were made
in the US and trucked to mexico for assembly. they did this because after the fire the new factory
did not have a CNC machine yet." Craigslist poster.
He's selling an mim strat white with maple neck.
Beautiful, couple dings here n there, don't bother me at all.
So, is that true? I'm curious to know, even if it's a mim built
And assembled, they're still selling it at s good price.

I believe the seller is correct.

There was in fact a fire at the Corona facility in the mid '90s which caused significant damage and a cessation in production.

Learn something new everyday.
I was under the impression that the fire happened earlier.
Wow, that is cool, I'll see if the seller still has the strat.
Thanks arjay

I've seen a couple of those guitars listed on Ebay recently.

I've read conflicting reviews on 90s mim strats.
Some say they are great, some say the quality was
sub par to today's, in regard to build and QA.
This one happens to be MIA neck/body but assembled
in Mexico . Are these those rare gems like early MIJ strats?
The seller lives about 2 hrs away, still at 250 might be worth
the trip.

The mid '90s MIM Strats that I've encountered seem to have better feel than more recent versions. I think that you'll be able to tell any difference as soon as you try it. Even the MIM Squires from that time were exceptional. I thought that the fire was in '93, which corresponds to Fender's lack of records from before '93. Not sure how long that the MIM used Am parts though.

The only prob i have right now, I'm saving up some cash for
a Lester traditional pro that came up at huge savings.
But man at 250 it's kind of hard to pass up.
And it's 2 hrs away from me, cant take the trip till the weekend.

IMO, a MIM for $250 doesn't qualify as a "huge savings". Considering gas prices, and travel time, not really a great deal. The MIM from that period are plentiful, likely you'll see another in the future. Perhaps '94 and '95 were better years anyway, and '96 just might be stretching the timeline a bit (JAG).

This may help ya....WIKI....On February 11, 1994 the Fender manufacturing plant based in Ensenada, Mexico burned down. Fender President Bill Shultz decided to temporarily move production from the Mexico plant to the U.S. plant. These Fender guitars are fairly rare and can be identified by the unique serial number.
