a student of mine brought in a strat, has the Fender(no squier) logo and says made in China, he bought it at a SuperTarget w amp etc for $199. needless to say at this price it is a total peice of crap. the frets hang over the edge of the neck, and cut into your hand, and the pickups suck..I am surprised Fender would allow their name on this guitar, is I missing somethin? anyone have any info on this atrocity?

I think you're talking about a Fender Starcaster/amp kit for begginers. They sell at a few major retailers.

is the cheapest version of a strat made by FENDER Im aware of. I know Squier has cheap little packs. Im just surprised Fender would produce a guitar of such low quality at any price, as they have a name and history to protect

I just want the neck. I'd have it cured, milled to 12" radius, new frets, locking tuners, toss the rest. I saw a Starcaster neck for sale on Ebay for about $40. I should have picked it up but I don't have the rest of the $$$ to complete the guitar.

Actually, now I remember what slowed my decision; it had the large headstock - not my fav but that's totally biased because I just don't own a strat with a large headstock.

What would you expect with something made in China ? From toys to clothing and everything in between, its all low end and should be avoided whenever possible.

As a sweeping generalization, I know that last statement is wrong.

Look at Gibson's Chinese Epiphone factory.

Not exactly true. I had a Squier Strat that was made it China and it was fantastic. I should have kept that one.

First of all, I would think that you would tell your students NOT to buy a musical instrument at a Target, but at a Music Store - for $199 he could have gotten a Squier starter pack which is a bit better quality. For a few dollars more and some time spent at a music store, he may have been able to find a nice used MIM Fender - I purchased a used Squier Strat for $85 which turned my whole attitude around concerning Fender/Squier -prior to that purchase I was Gibson all the way. I still have that Squier and it still plays like a dream- not bad for a Chinese made instrument.
Secondly as someone said, Epiphones are made in China and I have an Epi LP - true, I had to play a few before I found one that "fit" but it's a beautiful guitar and plays very well.
My suggestion would be to return the guitar and go to a store that specializes in ....musical instruments!!
