I recently swapped out the stock pickups from my RW P-bass with the '62 Re-issue pickups. I love the tone they create. However, I now have a hum from the amp when not I'm not touching anything metal on the bass. The bridge ground is fine, as the hum goes away as soon as I touch the strings, and all the connections are solid.

Is this normal for the '62 RI pickups?

Did you wire them correctly?

P-Bass pickups are deliberately connected out-of-phase to provide noise-cancelling.

Yes, the wiring is correct. Even took it to a local shop and had them "pop the hood" and take a look, and they verified everything was correct. Their repair guy, who is a respected pro, said that '62' RI's must be extremely hot. He'd never heard of a P-bass that hummed before.

Weird. My brother's all-original '66 Precision is quiet as a church mouse.

Mebbe some brass or copper shielding......?

Even the Guitar Fetish P-Bass type pickups ($40.00) that I installed in the Yamaha bass my next door neighbor gave me (with a 15 watt Crate bass amp all for free) are dead quiet. Sounds like maybe a bad set of pickups.
