Well, here it is, the initial entry into my thread on building a Weber 5F6A Bassman amp kit. What have I gotten myself into !?!?!?!?

The kit arrived in two large cartons a few days before Christmas, but I was a good boy and did not open it until Christmas day. :D What I found inside was amazing.

The cabinet is absolutely beautiful. It is made out of finger jointed pine boards just like Leo made them. It smells wonderful. The Weber 10" Alnico Signature speakers are already mounted. The Tweed covering is applied perfectly. I was going to lacquer the cabinet, but that would have to wait until spring. As it is, it is a perfect match for the Tweed covering on my Blues Deluxe Reissue. It looks like it was cut from the same bolt of cloth. I think I'm gonna just leave it alone.

There are no instructions included, just a parts inventory. The schematic and wiring diagram must be downloaded from the Weber website.

All the parts are stuck in bags and nothing is labled. The Alpha pots have their values written on them in sometimes hidden places. I'm going to have to print out a copy of the resistor color code as it has been too long since I used it. I'm not sure who the cap manufacturers are. The eyelet boards appear to be of good quality. The transformers don't have any manufacturer names on them but they appear to be well built. The chassis with its chrome plating and lettering is very nicely done.

My intent is to build the amp as close to the original schematic as possible. I have noted a few differences in the Weber schematic compared to the original Fender one that I plan on changing to the Fender values. I also plan on adding a bias adjustment pot. I did not order tubes with the amp. Once built I plan on using some spare tubes I have (mostly the GTs that came out of my BDRI) for testing and initial operation. I then plan on switching to the 59 Bassman tube kit from Eurotubes (JJ 12AX7s and JJ 6L6GCs) with a NOS 12AY7 in V1. I have priced out a nice set of NOS tubes from KCA but the cost is more than I can justify right now. But my birthday is coming up in April. :!:

Anyway, I will update this thread with a description and photos as work is completed. I have no idea how long this will take me or how often updates will be made. Just hang loose, subscribe to this thread, and watch for update notifications. It should be fun. Please wish me luck. :D

I'm subscribed mate, and very excited for you, everything looks fantastic. 8)

Also when checking the resistors to the colour chart, always double check them using your digital multimeter for the correct figure, put them into little plastic ziplock bags and label the bag with a sharpie. Do all that first and put them aside ready to use. Then when it comes time to use them during the build you can locate them easily without fuss, recheck with the multimeter (serves as a double check) and away you go.

Looking forward to the build! :D

I'll watch this with interest, a few months ago i built the tube depot 5E3 which came with good instructions and labeled bags of components.
I still had to double check component values with a meter like snowy said and there were a couple of "unknowns" such as mains transformer wiring.

It all turned out tickety boo so heres keeping fingers crossed all goes well for you.

Likes been said and im sure you know, take it nice and steady triple check etc etc.

Best of luck ......... youll end up with a nice amp 8)

I hope to start sorting through things tonight. I'm on vacation all this week until 1/3, but I have some home repairs to make that I have been putting off and they take priority. 'Course, I have to get in some guitar playing time too. :D

Good luck in your journey!

I have been looking into those Weber kits myself, but lack the knowledge to assemble one without detailed instructions and pics as of right now. I was looking at one of those JTM45 kits, as I have been really getting into Gary Moore a little more lately.

Wow, looks really sweet Bill. Congrats and nothing but good luck with the build. I got my little 5 watter. Looks decent. No Illinois caps and Hammond power tranny, ceramic tube sockets. cloth covered wire. Looks like fun. I'll post some photos later on and start a thread. It won't be as pretty as yours but still educational.

Best of luck again Bill.

Look to be a great kit to build. Take you time, don't rush and the amp will sound great the first time you power on.
Have fun and great time.
